The surest way to minimize civilian casualties is to not drop any bombs.

The incursion has been withdrawn, the threat has been contained as much as it can be. Any bombing now is pure retaliation. Any disablement of Hamas strength won by this will be only temporary and will be restored in a few years with more anger, all at the cost of civilian lives.

If Israel truly only cares about protecting Israeli lives, they'd establish a line, start rebuilding the fence with better surveillance and start negotiating for the release of the hostages.

Their regional rival Saudi Arabia is in talks with Israel to make an alliance with them and the u.s. in exchange for military aid. With recent events they now have to either

1. Give up on the alliance and the military aid and getting all the latest in military tech.
2. Continue forth with the alliance and make themselves look like a bootlicking puppet of the u.s. in front of the entire Arab world.

The original post was about Europe, that's the European average. Even the E.U. average is 30% and that doesn't include turkey and some of the Balkans. Also the point still stands even for the best example of Luxembourg at 46%, it's still less than half. Most people in Europe do not have a bachelors.

We could argue anecdotes and experiences back and forth and get nowhere, or we could look at the data. According to the LAPD 8% of crimes involved homeless people. This includes cases where either the victim or the suspect is homeless. The article also states that they are more likely the victim then the perpetrator so we can cut that down to ~3% are the suspects of crime. Also considering that homeless are often falsely accused or scapegoated that is still probably a high guess for actual perpetrators.

That's ~3% of crime, considering your also in general not likely to be a victim of crime the odds you are a victim of a crime committed by a homeless person is very low. Not 0 so you'll get lurid stories like the one you posted on the local news, but still low.

The tactic of citing the most horrific news story about an individual in a group of people has long been used to demonize people of color. Some news agencies realize they can't do this anymore so they're shifting to a new marginalized group that just so happens to be composed of mostly people of color.

It's a city of 10 million people , crazy fucked up shit is bound to happen, homeless people or not. Here in SF a tech CEO stabbed another CEO multiple times and left them in the streets, you don't see us trying to detain CEOs.

Maybe not capitalism in name but some vague idea of "the system". The system that raised rents and lowered their wages and forced them into homelessness, and continually punishes them for being so. Addiction and other anti-social behaviors could be an act of rebellion against the pressures of this system. Not all of those pressures are capitalistic, some are just basic requirements for any society, but a large chunk of them are.

What is havoc to you? I live in San Francisco and the homeless and addicts don't really bother people outside of them existing , which does seem to bother a lot of people. They do shoplift and car break ins are pretty common but it's not like they're running around brandishing knives. Most of them are opiate addicts, and you aren't aggressive or chaotic on heroine.

I agree we need more mental health and addiction treatment but you can't force people into it. If someone is in pain and don't see a reason to live outside of drugs, locking them up won't fix that. Either you keep them there forever or they'll relapse as soon as they get out. We need to address the societal issues causing this instead of the band aid solution of detainment.

Yes but those are also the countries with stagnating or decreasing emissions per capita, while the ones with rising emissions are also increasing in population. These compounding factors can cancel each other out when looking at net emissions.

Let's say right now we have 10 people from the u.s. emitting 10 tonnes of co2 and 10 people from the developing work emitting 1 tonne of co2, for a total of 110 tonnes of co2.

Now let's say in 50 years we now have 8 people in the u.s. emitting 8 tonnes of co2 and 12 people in the developing world emitting 5 tonnes of co2 for a total of 124 tonnes of co2.

This isn't to let western countries and their lifestyles off the hook, or that developing countries don't have a right to increase their standard of living like the west did, just saying populations stagnating or decreasing won't necessarily help climate change.

Only 30% of people in Europe have bachelors degrees, about the same as the u.s. Thats higher than in developing countries, say India at 8%, but a majority of people in both countries don't have degrees.

It's a common misconception by those with tertiary education in the first world that everyone else has tertiary education because they only talk to people in their social class with tertiary education.

You can use it on yourself to see what pictures are out there of you, and get notified if something new is posted that you may not know about without your consent. Don't see many legitimate reasons to use it on other people, but if it had some sort of identity verification so that only you could look up yourself I think it could be very useful.

You should be, because the u.s. will use this theater to justify sending huge amounts of military aid to Israel to level Gaza. Fuck Hamas but the u.s. sending more weapons over isn't going to help this situation.

While it remains illegal on the state and national level, some cities in California have already decriminalized. San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley and Santa Cruz. Come take your next trip in the Bay area!

And in California, just parts of it. Oakland has outright decriminalization and you can go to smoke shops and buy chocolates. It's still technically illegal in San Francisco, but every large event, or even day in the park, there's some guy walking around openly selling mushrooms and joints.

Not everything, but the Senate position for the most progressive state in the country, that seems fair. Due to the way the Senate was designed progressives are underrepresented. There are probably more progressives in California then the whole population of a couple smaller states combined, and they get no representation. Harris at least gave a little before she shifted right to try and become president, but now even she's gone.

Where should it be based then? I feel like you can't trust any state to not do this sort of thing to fight "terrorism" and "crime"

Are you against those taxes then, cause the premise sounds fair. Cars are dangerous and pollute a lot, whether they're in the countryside or in the city.

They're also expensive, especially older ones that you have to repair constantly. Seems you'll do more good for the poor in the countryside making the public transit better than getting rid of the tax. You know, direct your energy into something positive like sustainable public transit, instead of a technology that's slowly killing us.

Deep down I don't think he wanted it anymore. Trying to wrangle this shitshow of a party for 8 months has probably taken a decade off his life.

I think the idea of social media dividing us ignores the scale of it. All those other examples you gave were very local, and in that environment a consensus can form about certain political or ideological views. Those views could be vastly different than those a similar sized community holds 100 miles away though. Social media and it's global scale exposes those differences and makes consensus on any sort of issue impossible.

At the same time it also allows for minority solidarity outside of the traditional local community. For example there may only be 1 or 2 LGBT+ people in a town, which can easily be marginalized, shamed and ignored. But if they're able to communicate across geographic boundaries they're able to create a larger stronger community that is harder to ignore. It also does the same for nazis though.
