  • I said right-wing, not Russia.

    Oh you're right, my bad.

But now that you mention it, the MUh boTH sides false equivalence fallacy is textbook Russian IRA troll farm tactics though.

Because the Democrats weren't supporting Israel's genocide just as vigorously as the Republicans? Remember the North Gaza offensive? The war with Lebanon? Bombing the shit out of Syria? Bombing Yemen? Sometimes equivalence can be true, too.

  • These numbers seem pretty high, though.

that was "maybe it's for the better that we don't drain this swamp yet, we are starting to live better" kind of popularity.

Exactly. My point is that Putin had no reason to worry about being overthrown within a year of taking power because Russia simply did not and does not have that kind of popular energy. Therefore, he could sit on his ass and be a rightwing oligarch. Meanwhile Trump is closer to the Hitler model of a fascist taking over a country with strong popular resistance. There's currently no strong popular resistance to Trump don't get me wrong, but sooner or later there will be, so he (or rather whoever is pulling the strings in the White House) needs to have Nazi levels of preparation if he wants to enforce fascism on America. It goes without saying that there will be no "we are starting to live better" under Trump. Basically I'm doubting the black hole theory because now that Trump is in power he needs to create his own SS to crush whatever resistance will pop up; right now he simply doesn't have the resources to respond if all blue states become LA.

  • Because whenever a religious person or entity does a bad thing internet atheists are quick to say "see? This is PROOF that religion SUCKS! This would NEVER happen in an ATHEIST utopia," sometimes coupled with a call to ban religion or something equally insane. Sometimes you gotta point out the hypocrisy. I wish I was making this up, but yeah.

  • Because Putin was popular enough to build status quo fascism. Trump doesn't have such luxury, so he needs to get his act in order before domestic opposition finally wakes up. Federal forces, and specifically ICE, are woefully underprepared for enforcing authoritarian rule in a country as big as America, even setting aside the possibility of a civil war.

  • Overall the Chinese are somewhat known for pragmatic approaches, why chasing illusions in this case? The total number of readers and writers can't be that huge can't it?

Probably enlightened despotism giving way to regular despotism. Facing economic problems, and having shed all pretense of being socialist, the Chinese ruling class likely needs a scapegoat for the country's troubles.

  • I'd imagine it's just the argument for capitalism. You know, profit incentive increasing efficiency and productivity and all that. Now this stuff is true to an extent (though a lot of politically active Lemmy likes to pretend otherwise), but all the good stuff happens before a single person reaches a billion dollars so if that's the idea it would pretty much fall flat on its face.

  • Yes, they passed Obamacare, a Republican policy thought up by Heritage Foundation. Also note that they only passed the ACA when they should've damn near rebuilt the country from scratch. If this is the kind of policy Americans can expect when the Democrats have a trifecta and a massive grassroots movement, then you're basically making my point for me, but that's beside the point. The bigger problem is that they kept the filibuster and keep keeping the filibuster when they could've abolished it twice. Keeping the filibuster is a choice, so the whole talk about a filibuster-proof majority is nothing more than "sorry I shot myself in the foot so I can't come help you even though it's literally my job, now give me more money".

  • The Nazis started as a terrorist organization.

True, but they evolved into something more terrible than that, just like Zionist militias did in 1948. I feel that calling the IDF a terrorist organization, while catchy, is an understatement of the depth and scale of evil they're committing and have committed. They're closer to the raping, pillaging and murderous hordes of Genghis Khan.

  • Mostly yes, but the point is that the filibuster is/was their excuse for not doing shit to help the people when they could. DNC party hacks like to say "but they didn't have a filibuster-proof majority!!!" when people point out that the DNC has done exactly zilch to remedy America's long-term problems, so it's important to remember that keeping the filibuster was a choice by the DNC made for that purpose.
