  • Because of the way the Electoral College works, voters in swing states decide who wins the presidential election. Votes in states where a candidate is going to win by 30 points are meaningless to the presidential race, though they do matter in local and state-level elections.

For example, in the 2000 election about a thousand votes in Florida decided the entire election, while 88,000 Floridians voted for Ralph Nader instead of Al Gore as a protest vote. Swing state votes are the only ones that really matter.

  • Biden has always been a gaffe machine. His age has made the problem worse, but it’s always been true. I wish my vote mattered, and that I had a choice to vote for a candidate I actually like.

That said, if you live in a swing state, show up and vote for Biden. Your vote is one of the few in the country that actually counts on a national level, and staying home is a vote for Trump.

  • Being late wasn't anywhere near the power move of telling Tucker that he's going to do a 30-second history talk, then rambling about Genghis Khan and Russian princes from the Middle Ages for half an hour, then do another 15 minutes on 20th century history before even remotely beginning to answer the question.

Tucker kept trying to get him to say something relevant to the war, while Putin dismissed him with a hand wave to keep talking about a war with Poland in the 17th century and then World Wars 1 and 2. Truly bizarre interview.

  • Good to see a step being taken in the right direction. Bibi is crystal clear that he doesn't care about words. Hopefully, we'll find out shortly that this isn't a bluff, and a ceasefire will be signed that allows humanitarian aid to flow into Gaza.

  • I'd really like to think that these justices still care about things like legacy and consistency, but I'm not sure that's the case. I suppose we'll find out soon enough.

That, or they'll punt the ruling on some bullshit like waiting for Congress to act. That seems most likely at this point.

  • Fair point, but if the vote goes 6-3 and the Rs ignore originalism entirely in their opinion, I don't think anyone would expect their adherence to the doctrine to change in the next case or any cases afterward. It'll go down in the history books as a politically-motivated outlier case, not dissimilar to Bush v. Gore.

  • Reddit waited out the near-zero percent interest that persisted for over a decade and are now finally pulling the trigger on the IPO with interest rates sky high and investors skittish. The punchline is that the Fed is about to lower rates over the next year, which will make speculative investments more attractive again. They delayed all this time and destroyed the site with all their for-profit changes only to go forward on the IPO at the worst possible time.

So, Reddit's standard level of competence.

  • True, but politics tends to put an asterisk by justices' rulings. In Bush v. Gore, the Ds were arguing states rights, while the Rs were arguing federal supremacy. Completely against their usual positions, but everyone knows why.

  • Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) also recommended to his members in the meeting that they should vote to block the package from moving forward, according to Punchbowl News.

The recommendation is particularly stunning given that McConnell had cheered the negotiations over border policy for months. Just hours earlier on the Senate floor, McConnell touted the legislation, saying its billions of dollars in aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan are needed to counter aggression from dictators and terrorists around the globe.

It's not your usual election year fake "immigrant caravan;" It's the Mitch McConnell Immigrant Caravan that he and the GOP are inviting into the country by killing this legislation. Ole Open Borders Mitch, as they call him. Too bad they didn't give President Biden the tools he needed to stop the big, bad fake caravan.

  • In their Tuesday decision, the appellate judges went further than simply knocking down Trump’s bid to claim this near-limitless immunity. They also established a clear and direct relationship between Trump and the insurrection.

“The rally headlined by President Trump resulted in a march of thousands to the Capitol and the violent breach of the Capitol Building,” they wrote, noting that “Trump’s efforts to overturn the election results were unsuccessful.”

The Supremes could have taken it directly, but they decided to kick the can, and now if they want to rule for Trump, they have to overrule a very strong opinion from the DC Circuit.

  • China’s real estate market imploding is one of the worst bubble busts in modern history. Many Chinese people invest their savings in real estate they own on paper, but sits in the middle of nowhere unoccupied.

The biggest players in that market are defaulting on the interest payments of their loans and going under. The bubble is in the process of bursting. This is going to get ugly.

  • I never saw it, but all that can be done against monsters like that is remove the content and cooperate with law enforcement to find them.

I’m sure the mod team is doing their best. It’s like lone wolf terrorists. Hard to see it coming, but crack down hard when it happens.

  • ”They don’t need to be put in cages, separated from their children like during the Trump Administration, or be cut up by razor wire furnished by, of all places, South Dakota,” [Star Comes Out] said.

Good for the Oyate standing up with a strong leader. If anyone knows anything about the cruelty the American government can inflict, it’s the Native American people.
