  • A few things to note.

Once again, the mass media are calling these "violent protests", and tacitly giving cover for Trump despite no evidence that the protests have scaled to the point where the National Guard is even necessary. This will do little but embolden Trump to expand the use of these tactics to other cities, especially if he's going to have majority support from the voting base.

2/3 of the voters are either "not sure" or are actively supporting ICE and the Trump administration. He is literally marching in authoritarianism to thunderous applause. Worse, only 58% of Democrats approve of the protests. Which means 42% are either indifferent or are actively supporting ICE.

The more Trump marches in authoritarianism, the more people on both sides of the aisle seem to be stepping aside and saying "Right this way, sir."

  • Under review for what? Are they going to tell him he can't sell it? That would require a spine.

What's the point of this "review" if the only possible conclusion is to just retroactively endorse what he did? It's not like Trump is going to allow them to rule against him, or abide by their findings if they do.

  • The problem is that it puts you in a lose-lose situation.

MAGA doesn't give up. Their entire method of takeover is to flood you in a sea of shit to either force you to quit or make your life miserable if you don't. If they're in a position to do that, that means they're likely already in the majority and you'll never be able to accomplish anything of substance during your tenure, and they'll just ignore or shout you down during any kind of official meeting until you just give up. And they're playing the long game. They'll wait.

So you get to choose a tenure of frustration as you accomplish exactly nothing and watch as your name gets attached to every bad committee meeting the MAGA morons make (because you're still a member of that committee), or you can quit and watch all of your accomplishments be hand-waived away by whatever up-and-coming MAGA cocksucker takes your seat. It's like asking if you want to be shot or stabbed.

  • "In other news, numerous school police were arrested by federal agents and charged with interfering with a federal investigation when ICE agents arrested several Venezuelan gang members who were attending local graduations......"

    -- Tomorrow's headlines, probably.

    Or,

"In other news, ICE agents rounded up several Venezuelan gang members that were attending local events. Los Angeles School Police protested but did not otherwise have the authority or ability to interfere and stood by to ensure that the incident remained peaceful."

It'll be one or the other. Are LA "school police" full-time police officers, or glorified mall cops? (Serious question. I know districts where the school cops are actual local cops, and others where they're just glorified mall cops with no real authority.) And does anyone think that a few local police (or worse, some glorified mall cops) are going to be anything more than a minor inconvenience to an ICE department that have been all-but given permission to shoot first and don't even bother asking questions?

I mean, it's better than nothing, but if they want to even attempt to put up serious resistance, they should be calling up the Highway Patrol or the California guard. A few local cops aren't going to cut it.

  • Trump won't have to look far to find people willing to shoot at protesters.

For years, our government and law enforcement has been crammed with low-IQ people (they intentionally avoid recruiting people who are too smart) who love to over-armor and over-weapon themselves for even the simplest of duties and gleefully fire their weapon at any non-white object that happens to flinch in their presence. People, dogs, heck they threw a grenade into the crib of a baby once.

Anyone who thinks that the military will suddenly have a change of conscience and not fire on civilians is fooling themselves. There are plenty of people out there chomping at the bit to get their hands on a semi-automatic rifle and fire on the first brown person they see with so much as a can of spray paint in their hands (And they may not even have to have spray paint). Heck, one of them raised their gun and openly fired on an Australian reporter as she was broadcasting live just so he could show how big his pee-pee is and scare her off.

Do not think that the military will be the ones who will finally hold the line against Trump's tyranny. These people have been waiting their whole lives for the opportunity to be able to armor up and start indiscriminately shooting people with impunity. Evidence of that has been all over the news for decades. They won't stand up to Trump. They'll thank him for the opportunity and make MAGA hats part of the official uniform.

  • I understand your point, but here's where I have the problem.

All the judges are doing are issuing a bunch of empty threats in the form of contempt citations that they can't even really enforce, while Trump basically makes fools out of the lot of them by ignoring their orders, saying 'what the fuck are you gonna do about it', and basically laughing when they blink and do nothing.

At this point, the judiciary has been made to look like a laughing stock. And they're going to continue to look like a laughing stock until they at least try to do something above and beyond holding hearings months down the road and threatening contempt charges they can't even enforce. They need to actually hold people in contempt. Not just threaten to. They need to say "You will be held in contempt of court until I am given a satisfactory answer". "You ordered his illegal deportation. You will be held in contempt until he is back on US soil."

Something. Anything. Yes, it's very likely Trump will just issue pardons and have them out of jail before lunch, but for the love of fuck make him do it. Trump continues trying to shove his dick in their mouths, and right now, the courts' response is to simply start sucking. They need to at least try to bite.

  • Fair points. I will admit that I didn't look at or for every single livestream that was out there. But of all the livestreams I did view, I either saw absolutely nothing at all, a couple of skirmishes that barely qualified as drunken bar fights, and some minor looting. I did not see a single piece of footage that would justify calling in the national guard, and if there is footage out there of riots of the scale that would justify it, Trump would be touting it all over social media in order to make his case.

  • He's already going after them. Plenty of Trump supporters have been reported as being shocked and surprised when they're the ones that were put in handcuffs, or lost their jobs, or saw their spouses deported. It has led to virtually no change in sentiment among the Trump base.

Heck, how many videos were posted during the COVID pandemic of people literally praising Trump and claiming it's all a hoax as they were taking their dying breaths?

These people will praise Trump's name while staring down the bullet he ordered to be fired at them.

I don't mean to sound cynical, but as the saying goes, if I had a nickel for every time I heard "That is the line in the sand! That is what it will take to get MAGA to abandon him!", my unborn grandkids would never have to work a day in their lives.

  • Except that doing that would have probably cost her votes from the Jewish population, which outnumbers Palestinians tenfold.

Politically, the entire situation was a lose-lose issue for Harris from the beginning.

(And before anyone says anything, I'm on the side of the Palestinians. But I can also acknowledge that her taking that position would likely have cost her even more votes.)

  • Great. Now let’s see how he plans on enforcing that or what he plans on doing when Trump essentially tells him to go fuck himself.

I figure after being ignored about half a dozen or so times, this judge will follow the time-honored tradition of scheduling hearings a few months from now in order to discuss the possibility of holding a hearing about whether or not some low-level lackey should be held in a contempt of court charge that this judge also can’t enforce.

  • So for all the "The US military will not take illegal orders from Donald Trump!" crowd, there's your answer.

For years before Trump came along, people were ragging on the military and law enforcement for being low-IQ, over-armored people who liked the power trip of essentially playing a live game of Call of Duty and being able to project their power onto others. What makes you think that changed?

Now those same low-IQ people who are acting like it's a live game of COD get to shoot people they don't like with impunity. You think they're gonna abandon Trump? LOLOLOL. He just gave them the opportunity to live their dream. They get to fire into large crowds and treat every invasion of some random guy's home like a Seal-Team-Six mission where they're going after Osama Bin Laden himself. They're not gonna abandon Trump. They'll make the MAGA hat an official part of the uniform before that happens.

  • “This is not what we voted for,” state Sen. Ileana Garcia said in a statement Saturday.

Yes, yes it is. Trump was actively campaigning on doing exactly this throughout his entire campaign. This is exactly what you voted for.

“I have always supported Trump, through thick and thin. However, this is unacceptable and inhumane.”

Why? Because it affects your people now? You just admitted you were supporting him when he was doing unacceptable and inhumane things to other people. Sorry, I feel no sympathy for you. You got exactly what you voted for. While I am against Trump's deportations, I will shed no more tears for you when you are the one forced on the same train that the person you voted for is forcing everybody else on.

    Go fuck yourself.

  • nor in time of war, but in a manner to be prescribed by law.

And here are the words that concern me.

First, I don't want to hear "This would be a bridge too far even for the Trump administration! ______ would not let that happen! _____ would not allow Trump to get away with this!". My rebuttal would be to simply gesture broadly. Because he's been getting away with it for the past six months and counting. Every time

    <fill in the blank>

was expected to put up resistance to the Trump administration, that entity has simply rolled over and died at the first hint of political pressure. Right now, the law is whatever Trump says it is until someone finally stands up. And I haven't seen anybody willing to get their asses out of their seat yet.

    "Nor in time of war"

This is a problem easily rectified in the Trump administration by declaring a "war on immigration", and then justify it by saying that the Constitution doesn't require us being at war with an actual country. Given the other justifications Trump has gotten away with using, this would probably be more than enough for the GOP, rank-and-file MAGA voters, and probably even some courts.

"but in a manner to be prescribed by law."

Guess who's making the law right now? I don't care about the whole legal process. Right now, and until the GOP and the court system grows a collective spine, the law is whatever the last EO Trump signed says it is. And there's nothing stopping him from saying "Raid the houses, deport the illegals *, and use their homes to shelter the troops.". I will guarantee you that Trump's MAGA base would absolutely eat that up and ask for seconds.

    • (Definition of "illegals": Undocumented immigrants, along with anyone else too brown for Trump's liking.)

Depending on who's doing the interpreting, the 3rd amendment could just as easily be used as a sword or a shield. And right now, I don't like who gets to do the interpreting.
