  • It is their instance at the end of the day that people are being invited to use while they take on the cost and risks of running it. There's no ads here no monetization plans, so they can come up with whatever reason they want to defederate with them not being some company.

I just don't feel there's the same usual expectations and demands of a normal monetized website with how it is just some random people's instance we are using. Self hosting is the only way to truly have control, but when you're a guest you just have to either accept the rules or move. We can't exactly say we are paying customers.

  • I like this move from lemmy.world since too many users have seen it as the default instance to make communities. Was the reason why I was glad when Android from reddit came here and started their own instance. Communities being spread out so there isn't a single point of failure is nice, and it's only a few communities affected if you decide you don't want anything to do with them for whatever reason. So this has led to good reflection.

  • You are talking to people who some refuse to download Facebook, Instagram, tiktok, and some being degoogled and running GrapheneOS. And some who opt for self hosting over trusting companies with cloud.

When those people don't even see eye to eye with the average person from their country I sure don't think they are going to care about people overseas not caring about privacy. Especially if they are not pro government surveillance to begin with, and some even hating their government and being suspicious of them.

  • If you see the response to my comment that you responsed to you see that someone made a response along lines of what Gamers Nexus said near the end

I hope that people listened before they just jumped to the OMG drama wall comments

Found that funny, and does show why some of the comments are dismissive of the situation thinking it is just drama, and see it more as their favorite content creator being attacked than an assessment of the quality of reviews meant for consumers.

  • I think needing to write a wall of text to say Linus said this but he actually meant... shows a need for Linus to move away from off the cuff segments, and stick to scripted content.

It's not just a Linus thing, but for those who are strongly associated with a company brand it's the better move to start distancing personal opinion pieces from what can be associated with the company. He's not just some random employee of LTT who can have their thoughts hand waived away as not representing the views of the company. LTT has a way to go before everything stops being associated with Linus when it comes to the good or the bad.

  • To me attempts to play up the charity angle in a mishap just comes off as emotionally manipulative, which is generally never going to be a good look for someone who isn't a fan willing to give the benefit of the doubt. It doesn't matter who it is from or what company.

    He needs a PR team.

  • Having the same options when long-pressing a link in a comment/post would be nice as well.

I would like that too. It's also nice to see what the url is before actually opening up something too for safety reasons

  • Yeah, once you stop playing up the entertainment angle, but try to be a go to resource for consumer buying decisions the kid gloves come off. Hashing things out privately in that area is how you lose legitimacy if trying to seem credible and not playing favorites is the image you are trying to project to viewers.

  • Huh? Ongoing comment chain was started by someone saying they prefer paying for Westworld type productions over user generated YouTube content, and then people arguing about what they value in a service with one side arguing production quality and the other side taking the approach of quantity of hours of content is what matters. It's a separate discussion from ads.

This is a YouTube vs HBO, Apple TV, Netflix type discussion and which type of content they prefer than an ad one.

  • On desktop blocktube has improved things so much too. It has made search results so much better, since YouTube suppresses smaller channels in favor of the same large youtubers depending on the subject. Really wish it could be integrated into mobile YouTube options, but until then my hope is waiting until mobile firefox getting desktop extension support.

  • Doesn't really matter if he is critical on one segment but not so much either. Or that the blame is shifted to the writers. But, I guess it's just to say whoever it is sponsored segments are not to be trusted by default, and best being ignored.

Like even pro athletes end up shilling and using products that end up hurting them despite being in the 1% in their field like Lonzo Ball and his crappy shoes.

  • My first impression for anything on YouTube is untrustworthy spam. Don't matter who it is. It's just the reality of paid sponsorships, and anyone being paid is going to generally talk up the positives, and talk up how much integrity they have. It's not just a YouTube thing either. I assume the same for celebrity endorsements even if it is in an area they are an expert in like sports, since product they use isn't the quality that reaches consumers. Sometimes even the products they use is crap and ends up hurting them. Example Lonzo Ball and the shoes he endorsed.

It's just general good skepticism towards the marketing machine. Nobody is to be trusted when it comes to what they are paid to shill.

  • Yeah, bothered me during the protests to see people downplaying the importance of mods from those who were upset about their favorite sub being shut down. It's a thankless job that takes lot of building to get started and exposure to bunch of crap to keep the place nice for its users.

  • If you’re having problem keeping your attention span focused, maybe go see a doctor or therapist for adhd or something? Because there is so much shit on YouTube that you should 100% be able to find content to suit you.

Uh... That seems unnecessarily hostile haha. That's good for, but my point was that for me. Not you. For me that I haven't found anything that provides the type of content I've found on Netflix, HBO, etc on YouTube on a consistent basis. I'm not talking about the ability of something to just keep people fixated for hours the way tiktok has become king in that area and YouTube is trying to catch up with shorts. But, more general conventional entertainment beyond those that are fun time passers the way mobile games are, but might not meet expectations of a Last of Us or Elden Ring or Breath of the Wild type game release on other old school platforms if that makes any sense.

I think we are talking about different things. You more about ability of content to take up time and keep people in a loop. Me more whether the services has the type of medium I want. Which regardless of the amount of content YouTube has it doesn't really have, which makes the whole channel numbers for my case not really matter. Apple has made much more progress in original content I want to watch than YouTube has.
