  • That's all I expect from blocking. I didn't like the reddit move to changing how blocking worked from responding to not being able to see the message and prevent them from responding.

It's only defederation where I would want that feature, but for most cases having things not visible or notified on your end is sufficient.

I could see reddit style block being important though for Twitter where it is such a one on one form of social media.

  • Yeah, there's now a lot of people who have actually never used a desktop OS, and the only OS they've used being a phone or tablet. Those people are more having an influence on dumbing down the OS now. It's pretty crazy how compute illiterate newer generations have become due to shift in what is considered their primary OS. Some people don't even have laptop or desktops.

  • It also depends on how the data is being used. For this study source of wages is being heavily weighted as well as what companies an individual chooses to invest in. So while household is the focus of the headline companies are more the focus, since by the metric used it seems as though someone who lives a green life style on paper living in a tent and biking but invests majority of their money and sees it grow would be a heavier polluter than someone who makes less but lives in a big house, drives suvs and pick ups, but doesn't see their net worth increase with most money not being used towards investments but paying off debt.

  • What I got from the study is source of your wage and investments have more to do with how much of a high polluter you are than what you choose to do individually. So you could be a high wage earner who lives in a tent and bikes and invests a majority of their money that grows in profit, and that because of the growing investments and employer make you a higher polluter than someone who lives in a huge house and drives suvs and pick ups and doesn't see their net worth grow due to so much of their stuff being financed.

With the money source being weighted this kind of feels more like an industry analysis despite the individual focus with how indirect it is, and based on some of comments here I guess people didn't read the article either not realizing it has less to do with individual efforts like solar or private jets. At least that's what I got from my attempt to understand the study.

Conclusion seems to be more that companies that pollute pay higher wages than a study of direct household pollution.

  • Kind of confusing study. I thought it would outline how specifically those 10% are emitting that many gasses, so doing breakdowns like how much it costs to operate their homes and breakdowns of their methods of travel.

But, it is taking into consideration stuff like company they work for so like someone who lives without electricity in a tent and bikes but gets a high wages from a petroleum factory while investing most of their money as an engineer would be considered to be a higher gas emitter than someone who works in insurance while driving suvs and pickup trucks and living in a huge house.

It's pretty abstract. Makes for a catchy headline, but not the direct picture I was hoping for when it comes to a household because it's more an industry revenue analysis.

For those that want to skip straight to the study here it is

  • The complaint is seeking class-action certification on behalf of people who bought a 500GB, 1TB, 2TB, or 4TB SanDisk Extreme Pro, SanDisk Extreme, or Western Digital My Passport SSD that was "designed, manufactured, distributed, promoted and/or sold" since January 2023.

Looks like this is for people who've purchased the drives since January 2023. So does it not affect people from before?

  • Pseudonym based social media and utilizing filtering to block content. If there isn't official filtering tools or community work around then it's a headache. Also, ability to disable notifications, which is something lemmy or kbin currently does not have that I miss from reddit that helps you drop conversations you don't want to be a part of anymore.

I enjoyed my time on reddit because of the above, and never really encountered the toxic complaints people often bring up. Ability to curate and control what you see is important to getting the experience you want, since you can't control what people post. But, being able to control what you see helps a lot.

  • Mp3s are fortunately in a really good place with them being DRM free. Was why when Google Music shut down I was still able to download my music purchases and keep them for myself. It's one of more widespread consumer friendly digital options out there compared to all the DRM and account based digital options that exist for other products.

  • People did move here from reddit after all. That's why I recommend apps like lemmy connect on Android with keyword filtering. You can't control what people post, but you can regain control by controlling what you see.

  • Calling out the integrity of a channel after that channels spent millions trying to shed the perception of them as just an entertainment channel as opposed to a trustworthy and reliable review channel by investing in the lab? Who comes off here thinking LTT is even more trustworthy when it comes to their reviews which weren't trusted in the community to begin with.

If this were just some personality driven non tech recommending channel I could agree, but LTT is a channel reviewing hardware like Intel and amd to name a few alongside their wacky lets build a teleporting PC. There's just some channels where hits to reputation would hurt them as opposed to help.

  • Piracy I associate as an illegal act that carries penalties of fines and imprisonment. Like real piracy...

As blocking is legal and something even the FBI recommends. This is more a website shortcoming than an act of piracy. Which if blocking ads is piracy then at that point the word just becomes diluted, and at that point who even cares.

  • Yeah, these are not company run sites with monetization plans. People saying they'll show them by leaving is funny, since these instances cost money as opposed to making money so I don't think they'll be sad about less overhead. People here aren't paying customers but guests being invited to use another person's instance over self hosting their own.

If people want uninterrupted access to this instance they can sign up to this instance, self host, or look for instances located in a country with less strict laws that might lower chances of defederation from here?
