  • I understand blocking this bridge, but if admins do that, they should block other bridges too, like bird.makeup

  • Threads isn't federated yet. It'll be a while before fediverse accounts can be seen on threads

  • There are ads on the app store, which I'd consider to be part of the "primary operating system", especially since it's the only way to install apps.

Not to mention constant ads for icloud. In the photos app, and even notifications from the settings app. (It's possible to turn these off, but not easy or intuitive).

After switching to Android, I haven't seen a single ad in the operating system, (I think Play Store does have ads, I just haven't got any for some reason). The closest thing is Google photos sometimes asking me to turn on backup.

  • It's acting up, so the feed doesn't work, but if you go to the profile of someone you already subscribed to you can kinda see their posts? It's weird

  • When will the results be posted? I want to see the desserts :)

  • At this point vpns are popular enough and have enough ads about them that most people will be able to look up 'free vpn' on the app store and download the first one that comes up. They're not difficult to use at all

  • (assuming that's what they mean by "the fediverse", the use of which was the first big hint that humans didn't write this text)

What do you mean? Do humans not say 'the fediverse'? I've seen plenty of people use it. We are even in a community called fediverse

  • See what? Posts from threads? Depends on your instance and how you browse.

Lemmy has no microblogging features so you won't be seeing any (unless they're specifically posting to Lemmy)

Kbin I'm not too sure since there are microblogging features but idk how they work.

Mastodon; you will see posts from threads users if you follow them, or if someone you follow boosts a post from them.
If you browse by the explore/posts tab, you might see some threads posts. Also from the 'All'/federated tab.
You'll be able to block threads for your account, or choose an instance that's defederated.

  • I always used it when I had one.

Now, I use an adapter for headphone jack to USB-C. Every day.

  • I don't agree at all here. If someone on threads has posts you like, you can follow them. If not, you won't see any posts from threads on your feed.

Your feed will either be the same as before, or better than before.

  • What do you mean discovery feeds? Like the federated/all tab?

Because those feeds only show posts that the instance knows about, which is (mostly) posts from people that at least one person on your instance followed.

If you check the all tab on a small instance, it's a lot quieter than it is on something like mastodon.social.

  • For me the biggest selling point of e-ink is for reading late at night. Since it's not backlit it's better for sleep, I think? Easier on the eyes, anyways.

  • If RCS is end to end encrypted, and doesn't use messaging fees, then every reason they decided to drop sms is no longer valid, except for needing to spend more time developing it.

I doubt they'll add it even if they did have the option, but it's not ridiculous that they could.

  • There's probably a way to do it in browser with ublock origin or another extension.

    On android, ReVanced.

  • No; the background colors are the same but it has an edge

  • For F-Droid in specific, you'll need an F-Droid client. I use Droid-ify (GitHub) (F-Droid) (IzzyOnDroid), but you can use whichever you prefer. F-Droid is a good source for open source apps.

If you're sideloading from different sources, Obtanium (GitHub) (IzzyOnDroid) is useful to download apps, and keep them updated. You can even kinda use it as an F-Droid client.

Google is pretty lax on what it allows on Google play, so unless you're trying to avoid using Google services or you want to install apps that aren't on the play store, you don't need to do it.

If you want adbocking and extra features in some apps (especially YouTube), check out ReVanced.

Google isn't lying - there are risks to sideloading if you don't know what you're doing. Make sure what you're downloading is coming from legitimate sources you trust. For example, if you look up ReVanced, some unofficial websites show up which may have malware. Triple check everything is coming from an official source.

  • I have fennec f - droid and can't find how to download them easily. What fork are you using?

  • I'm 99% sure that signal isn't peer to peer. Afaik all messages go through signal's servers, but they're end to end encrypted so the server can't see message contents, or who the messages are coming from.

The only thing that's peer to peer are calls, but you can turn on 'Always relay calls' from settings to relay them through Signal's servers.

  • If you go to the View Safety Number page of a chat, you'll see that they're changing the safety numbers. Here's the explanation they gave.

I'm glad to see progress is being made! I wonder if after usernames are added people will use it to message people on the internet, like discord is used.
