still can't believe our country was literally put under the administration of an EU banker
redditors be like "this is out of context" as if there is a context where not condemning nazis is fine
tfw you get atomized by a ballistic missile even though you trained like goku for months
I still lurk reddit and by now i am convinced that there is literally no possible way to gain something by that site
Shit that sounds bleak. How did they even manage to get to that point? How are they outvoting the urban centers the likes of Amsterdam or Rotterdam? Is it just mainstream right wing populism with a coat of "farmer's interests" paint?
i feel like what a lot of people miss when it comes to "third reich" comparison is that no one actually knows or understands the intricacies of the nazi political system, how it worked, its objectives and whatnot.
It's just an archetype. the idea of the third reich entered the collective psyche as a general and vague idea of "evil government".
Look at any popular media featuring an evil empire, for example star wars: the enemy is always nothing but a reskin of the nazis. Because that's what we imagine "evil" looks like, and thus why both left and right call each other literally Hitler - it's such a vague idea that it can be applied to anything from concentration camps to 15 minutes cities.
anyone trying to draw serious comparisons with a government that existed 80 years ago just doesn't know what they are talking about and is just trying to ride the rethorical power of words like "gestapo" "hitler" or "nazi germany". Any self-respecting communist should be able to argue without resorting to that.
it's kind of like calling someone who did property damage "vandal". Whoever uses that term is hardly familiar with the vandal tribe and the vandalic kingdom, it's just an archetype that has been used for so long that the original meaning is no longer relevant
just like any other vague right wing buzzwords ("the elites" "them" "deep state" or whatever) the easy way to make sense out of them is to understand that they are just replacements for "the jews".
when they complain about "woke hollywood" what they are actually ranting about is what they perceive as the jewish/cultural marxist influence on hollywood
istg farmers in western europe are the most insufferable bunch. Same in Switzerland. Yeah, sorry that the evil urbanites won't let you completely disregard biodiversity and sustainability for the sake of your short term profits.
and they also always use that patronizing "the cities forgot that WE grow food" argument as if 1. urban dwellers think supermarkets just make the food 2. they themselves aren't just one part of the supply chain who's equally worthless without the others.
add to that that due to rural life they tend to be racist, homophobic and generally ultraconservatives, and you get a lovely bunch.
our national bank literally took like 15 minutes to decide that they were going to spend 50+ billions of francs to bail out credit suisse. And we are in the middle of the elections. this is going to be fun.
At least weed isn't going to increase in price
only people who aren't in the EU like the EU
got raised in a soccdem family with communist aesthetics (parents are socdem but for example dad is adamant that Stalin saved the planet).
When i was 15 the local socialist party tasked some people to reform the youth wing. i got recruited, i was the youngest. Initially i was very active and involved. As one of the first members i got to power positions relatively quickly and by 18 i was already in the "everything sucks and electoral socialism is pointless" phase. As i got mature enough to read theory and do proper research, i gradually moved closer and closer to marxist-leninist ideal and developed a more objective (and, by comparison, positive) opinion of AES countries that our media constantly demonized.
I then had like 4-5 years where i barely did anything in the party but hang around and make use of my reputation/influence i had built until then to occasionally steer the discussion on some votes. But i was already quite certain that this movement was going nowhere, so what i really cared about were the insider informations going around in the main party and in the government (i personally knew people who eventually got elected).
With time i formed my clique of closet communists who do the same, sort of hang around and coordinate to strike when needed.
now i still "pull strings" in both the youth wing and the main party, but because of my ideology i rarely engage in activism or debates. I use it as a way to scout for promising radical zoomers and as a platform to dish out the occasional marxist analysis of situations.
I'm trying to find my way towards something more serious and underground, but obv i ain't gonna share much detail right now
I get you, but i will say that overconfidence is just a very normal human sentiment that is difficult to control on a large scale. We have been seeing examples of this since the ancient times, several countries and empire shot themselves in the foot because they were blinded by their own feeling of superiority.
I agree, we should be careful, but on the other hand there isn't much to do about it.
that movie made me feel like a proud irish man and i am a swiss millenial
Starship troopers is my guilty pleasure movie, i just love it so much. Pure fun
i'm a big fan of Ken Loach, sometimes not overtly leftist but always working class-oriented. Plus the guy was super nice when we got the chance to meet him so i like him on a personal level.
Being a communist isn't illegal, there is an actual hammer and sickle communost party. The issue is that being open about being communist (when it comes to stuff like elections) is the best way to be sidelined as a lunatic and get 1% of the vote at most.
Imo it's a better use of time to try and steer a major party a bit while conducting the real activity in the background
Yeah, that is also a thing i should've said. It's a skill in and of itself to be able to get the right points across while dancing around dangerous words.
In the right context, it's entirely possible to convey messages such as "the last capitalist we hang will be the one who sold us the rope" or "as a leader stalin is unmatched in terms of right decisions" without entering "crazy" territory. Having a good sense of humor helps too, stuff that gets a chuckle is easy to remember.
But i will say this to anyone reading these answers: this comes with experience so get out and talk to people. Yeah maybe you will not get along with everybody but you'd be surprised how easy it is to meet people with similar ideas to yours or people that don't care enough for it to be a point of conflict.
in years of having to disguise myself as a "moderate" to do IRL politics, i have learned some thinngs.
The most important is to pick your battles. Is it worth it to get on someone's bad side just to defend Stalin? Who cares. Convincing that single person won't make a difference. It's tough, but you just have to suck up your pride and ignore the ignorance many people have on these subjects. You also have to understand that people who have been indoctrinated since birth are not... easy to convert. If you have been told all of your life that water boils at 100 degrees no matter what, you would just think i was crazy if i told you that the temperature at which it boils on top of mount everest is different. No matter how right i was. You can present sources and do all the theoretical work you want, the truth is that with the majority of people it will just not work. Save your energy for something more productive.
Besides, if you engage one, two, three, ten times... then you do become the caricature of the annoying leftist that has to always be "akchually" and that pulls out so many unknown facts that people think it's just made up jargon.
But if you don't and manage to keep the "functional and moderate member of society" facade up, during important moments you will be able to go ham because people have come to know you as a reasonable person.
When the question of Russia came up in my party (which is the youth wing of the main succdem party) i and a few closet-communist pals were the ones controlling the narrative because we could just talk basic geopolitics and people would believe us since we never came off as "extremist" by praising stalin in public (don't get me wrong we hella praise stalin in private). Yes it was annoying having to listen to people talk about how evil red fash the USSR was or how china bad, but now we got all of those people to understand that NATO is at fault for all of this solely because we managed to never lose any credibility by avoiding pointless discussions.
btw, by "losing credibility" i mean "opposing the mainstream narrative and be labeled as a conspiracy theorist".
It is a bit harder when it comes to people you really do care about. For me it was a mix if things. for example i try to get close to likeminded people, so i never come out as a ML but i do drop some hints about being leftist to "test" people i meet and see if they get it. This alone allows you to at least avoid MOST big issues. Another thing, as said above, is just your ability to swallow your pride. We still gotta live normal lives, there is no point in ruining relationships of friendships over politics. It can be taxing long term, but let me be real: the path we have chosen to follow is not easy, it has never been for anyone. Politics is a very important field of life, but the truth is that it is only one field.
Keep up the fight, but remember that no one expects you to be fighting 24/24. Politics are very important to me and i am sure for you too to a degree, but to most people it's just not like that. In my opinion you should just try to asess how much they actually give a shit about hitler or stalin. because chances are that they don't care nearly enough to have THAT jeopardize the relationship.
Wtf great wall of china redemption arc?
i follow a lot of news from the war.
Everyone agrees that there has been a full on internet offensive in these days, probably connected to the fall of Bakhmut. Even in "neutral" communities, the nafo bots are out in full force.
In all likelyhood they figured that Russia will be able to celebrate the liberation of Bakhmut by the 9th of may, Victory day. Wouldn't be surprised if the reddit batallion has been mobilized to downplay the importance of those events or to otherwise taint Russia's celebration.
It's also believable that this is simply an effort to flood the internet in order to mud the waters and hide possible leaks concerning the (alleged) upcoming ukrainian offensive. Just today i saw a couple of trademark videos of the "clean and shaven soldier in Bakhmut" claiming that there is a "surprise coming" for the russians
This definitely happens in waves, increases in "lib activity" are never random
