  • Obligatory:

Shared not to be smug, but to reinforce what is possible if a state government spends money on infrastructure. This line is new, it was completed two years ago. It tunnels a few kilometers under the river and established suburbs.

Melbourne can have this, too. The technology is easy enough. Yes, it is expensive.

Edit: Updated with car directions also, showing the train is the quickest way.

  • We saw a rock instead. Had lunch there.

Not that we'd go there, but there were no maccas anywhere on the route until Perth. We were going to drop into Yummylicious 30 minutes into the journey, but it turned out they didn't open until 10 and we weren't going to wait around an hour for that.

  • Will spend today driving home. The holiday has been great, but we're about ready to sleep in our own bed.

Facing a 6 hour drive in the morning - better get some sleep!

  • Only if you're drinking espresso. And only ever offering espresso to prospective guests. As a flat white drinker, I'd still need a kettle.

This is a great week to pick them up for free/almost free as people got upgrades for Christmas and offload their old ones.

  • The "Holiday" part of the Holiday starts today. Starting with a 5-hour drive to the south coast, where we will be for the next week or so. Denmark to maybe as far as Esperence.

  • I know this doesn't answer the "best instant coffee" question, but an $8 Ikea plunger and real ground coffee from Colesworth/Aldi negates the need to ever settle for instant. It actually works out a little cheaper, too.

  • Does it work for Australian purchases? I'm sure lots of the brands will be here also, but I doubt a US site would be testing Australian/New Zealand brands like Westinghouse or Fisher & Paykel (however that's spelled).

  • The article doesn't mention superannuation, I wonder whether that's also covered?

I'm fairly sure that a former employer underpaid my super to the tune of about $5k, but I was young and lazy and stupidly didn't follow that up.

It's a bit hard to go back 15 years later and ask. I don't really even know what he should have paid vs. what he actually paid. My suspicion comes from other employees complaining that super was not being paid.

  • I find value in it, but probably don't use it enough to justify the $70 or whatever it is per year. I might use it for one or two purchases a year.

Tell us what you're interested in and I'll tell you the Choice recommendation. 😉

  • We have all been there. These days, I usually screw up timing. I always under/overestimate how long something will take and end up with part of the meal ready and getting cold while the other part is 15 minutes away.

This is the time to make these mistakes. While nobody else is waiting for you or having to eat what you make. You're getting a huge head start on your peers, half of whom won't actually cook for themselves until they move out of their parents' in their mid 20's.

  • 4,000 kj?! That's something like half an adult daily intake. Plus it's awful for you, has little nutrition. You'll just feel hungry again after a short time.

  • Is it just me, or were boxing Day sales cancelled this year? Went to the shops today for the regular weekly groceries, and it was pretty normal. No extra crowds, stores had regular looking signage and patrons.

I know it was Boxing Day +2, but still it would have been busy still on previous years.

I haven't seen any amazing deals go past my feeds online either.

  • I might have 18tb total storage capacity in the house (5 phones, 3 tablets, 5 laptops, two servers, one desktop and external storage). I sure as hell don't have 43 tb. What the hell are you transferring?

  • I'm glad I don't need to watch the amount downloaded on the home Internet any longer. Between my kid downloading most of his Nintendo Switch library to his shiny new SD card on Christmas night and me downloading 100 GB or so off Steam tonight, it would have blown away whatever limits my account had.

To think, I took a screenshot of an especially heavy download session one time in the 90's, where I managed to stay online for almost 24 hours and downloaded 139 MB! One session!

  • I saw a Japan v. Australia World Cup qualifier match at the MCG and I don't remember even that crowd being so one-sided as a BBL game.

I wonder whether this is something the league can work on? Maybe have better crowd coordination of the "away" supporters sitting together?

  • Big W supposedly have Lego 60423 on clearance, but every Perth store has sold out. If you could grab one (or actually just let me know if you spot it in stock), I have a kid who will be very grateful.

  • You're not wrong. The first innings of the cricket last night while Perth was batting was lively and boisterous. The second half of the game was utter silence except for wickets. 41,200 people all with nothing much to say can be eerie.

There's nothing like it. An AFL crowd always has a decent portion of opposition supporters. The Rugby State of Origin is almost 50/50. While I'm certain it wasn't, BBL felt like it was 100% home crowd.

  • It was a fun game. We have family visiting from Brisbane and Canberra. Twelve of us all went together. Great family bonding.

  • I'm literally sitting in Optus Stadium, waiting for the BBL Scorchers v. Heat game to start. It's definitely a spectator game.

It feels like the final hours of a One Day match where you are chasing a run rate of 6-8 per over. All game. Games only go for about 3 hours total. A little longer than an AFL game.
