  • I use a custom OS (iodéOS) and can use biometrical security (fingerprint reader) and my banking app works fine. It has MicroG and passes SafetyNet.

With this being said, not all banking apps will work on custom ROMs / OSs, and SafetyNet might fail any day, as the developer has said, being honest, that it's a game of cat and mouse.

  • OK, thanks for your reply. I'll get the APK from GitHub and try it soon then. I hope there's some way of removing words that the App's dictionary has learned too. It drives me mad that OpenBoard has learned some of my spelling mistakes and now autocorrects to them.

  • You're welcome. Take into account that switching from Apple / Google Maps to one of those apps is quite a change and takes some time to get used to: they work offline (which is great for hiking or traveling abroad) so you need to download the maps you'll use beforehand. Also the data might be incomplete... but you can help to improve it, which I find really cool. And it's important to realise that the data doesn't come from the same source as the app, so missing map data is not the app developer's fault. Finally there's no business reviews or ratings, which I don't personally miss, but I understand some people will.

  • I use Yet Another Call Blocker too, and although the app hasn't been updated in a while, the database is updated daily.

I am not sure about what security risks there could be with this app not being updated in 1.5 years, since it only connects to the internet to download database updates. I am happy to be educated about the security risks that using this "old" app could have.

  • Interesting, do you know if it's in F-Droid? Or did you install the APK from GitHub?

When I follow your link and tap on the F-Droid link it takes me to the original OpenBoard instead of this fork. I guess they might just have kept the original Readme file with the F-Droid link to the original app...

  • I'd say ditch both Apple and Google and use an app based on OpenStreetMap data. The mapping data shouldn't belong to any corporation that can decide to restrict access tomorrow. Use OpenStreetMap and if you find the mapping is not good enough contribute to improve it, just like one can do in Wikipedia.

To access OpenStreetMap data I'd recommend the apps Organic Maps (lightweight and simple) or OsmAnd (more feature packed but heavier). Magic Earth is also an alternative.

  • You are right, I ran the test on Mull + uBlock Origin on a phone running an ad/tracker blocker at OS level, and this tool reported connections that I couldn't find in my logs.

It however helped me identify appmetrica.yandex.ru which was not blocked.

  • It would be great, but a big problem that I see with a new, completely different OS is... the apps.

If a new OS not based on Android launches tomorrow, it will have no 3rd party apps, and it will be very hard to catch momentum without WhatsApp, Youtube, Netflix, Spotify, TikTok, Facebook, Twitter X (🙄), Uber... all of those apps that most people use their phone for 90% of the time.

  • I had a discussion some time ago in Reddit with someone who argued that Spain is not western Europe, but Germany is. They even provided links and it seems that geopolitically it is considered like that, but having lived in Spain and Germany and in between I think barely anyone raised there would say so

  • Another vote for KISS (https://kisslauncher.com/) and Kvaesitso (https://github.com/MM2-0/Kvaesitso/).

Both FOSS, both search based. Depending on your taste you might find KISS perfectly simple and Kvaesitso a bit bloated; or KISS too basic and Kvaesitso more feature packed and complete.

I'd recommend trying both and deciding for yourself.

  • Yeah, that is just my experience and, of course, will vary with others depending on which apps you track with Obtainium, and maybe on which ROM you run.

I still find a bit odd how some people want to avoid F-Droid, being a reputable source that checks for anti-features and builds from source to make sure the final apk matches with the published code.

However, I am happy that there are several options to install and update FOSS apps in Android and derived ROMs: we can all choose what we prefer and have other options as backup.
