  • I got haggled for being a macos user in college because, "pc was superior". Turns out, that the CompSci people that gave me shit about my Mac, didn't understand the difference between "PC" and "Windows'. My MacBook is still the best laptop I've ever owned. It literally survived having beer being pulled into it's fan, and it's battery turned into a balloon long ago... it still runs fine, almost a decade later (if I keep it plugged in). I was "tech illiterate" to people because I used a MacBook. But switching from windows to mac, got me comfortable with trying linux. It got me comfortable with being uncomfortable, because I was constantly trying to figure out how to "get this to work on macos"

I've met a lot of tech-illiterate people over the years... and they all gave me less shit about trying something different.

    I don't use arch btw

  • I still wear masks in public, but holy shit does it make people harder to understand when I can't see their lips. I wanna say that someone made a "clear" mask for that exact reason. Dunno how exactly or where I remember that from, but it's a good idea

  • Your experience seems very much like my own. I don't have hearing loss, but what I assume is an auditory processing issue with speech.

It's much easier for me to understand what someone is saying when I can see their mouth and microexpressions. If my back is turned, I don't always catch everything. Sometimes I keep hearing the "wrong thing" no matter how much I ask for them to repeat it... so I just learned to repeat back whatever non-sensical thing I "heard"; and that either helps me process what they were trying to say, or they will repeat it back slower and more clearly. It's frustrating sometimes, especially in noisier environments with a lot of other stimulus... that's when seeing someone's lips will help the most for me

And of course, I love subtitles. Otherwise I have to blast the TV, and still will miss things. The subtitles just clarify what I'm pretty sure I heard, or what I missed. I'm not just reading my way through everything, unless it's in another language... which than does feel like a switch in the way I "see subtitles"

  • I'm now pooping outside for the neighbors to see... and probably fell over, bare-ass, struggling to figure out wtf just happened. And I'm locked out with a dirty bum; whyyyy!? Why have I been forsaken during my phone poop time?!

  • don't give them an excuse to kick us out

It's like you unlocked some latent memory of mine lol. I took a little "begginer instruction" course and that was one of the major sentiments... basically, don't act/seem reckless. It didn't really apply to me at the time, as I couldn't even stop without falling. I would gain a little speed, then fall, and repeat. Took a little bit to figure out the "carving" aspect. Good times. And very very sore afterward, but still good times

  • Currently on the toilet, having a pre-workout poop. It feels like Lemmy is watching me.

I was going to just do cardio, but I guess I'll add 20 push-ups at the end... I'm now too scared not to

  • The first time I got to go to the slopes as a kid, I chose snowboarding (we were renting equipment). And I learned that it was rather recent that snowboards were fully-allowed to be used on their resort. Something about requiring the board to have a metal edge, if you brought your own? I don't fully remember. I was too young to realize that snowboarding was not allowed on many ski slopes, or that the divide was ever a thing

Then Johnny Tsunami came out and it blew my mind a little that it really must have been a whole thing. I kinda came in, just as snowboarding was more universally accepted, like early 90's.

No point to my story, I just always think about my first "ski" trip, anytime I'm reminded that snowboarding used to be banned
