  • My old dentist suggested keeping floss wherever you sit to relax (his example was wherever you sit to watch TV). That way, you can spend as much time as you need to floss thoroughly, without it feeling like flossing is taking up a bunch of time out of your day. It's not a perfect solution, but it has been helping me.

  • Maybe I'm just a silly American, but what kind of weirdo reports foreigners to police for being suspected migrants? Best case scenario ends like this where you end up looking like a racist dick. Like, I understand reporting actual crime to police, but the likelihood that you've run across nefarious immigrants out to cause harm is really low compared to the likelihood that they're legal citizens or tourists. And even in the off chance that they are illegal migrants, existing shouldn't be a crime, it's none of your business, shut your mouth and leave them alone.

  • Yeah, Gates bought QDOS (aka 86-DOS), to license it to IBM as MS DOS after his mom did the ground work of marketing him to the right people at IBM. And somehow people still respect him, as if he wasn't the proto-Elon.

  • I'm fine with the merch window in the sidebar, although lately they've added an overlay on desktop that appears over the video (even in fullscreen) that I think is going to get annoying real quick if they keep it around. If I'm watching a video from a creator, there's a good chance I'll be interested in their merch, and having a standard place for creators to show off merch without having to shill it in every video, is a feature worth having IMO. But I don't want anything overlayed on the video - especially in fullscreen, and if anything it makes me less likely to support the creator by buying merch - even though the overlay is almost certainly something Google added without any opt-in from creators.

  • I've never heard any confirmation of GoDaddy falsely charging a premium for domains, but I definitely experienced that kind of thing with them years ago. Wasn't really a "few-minutes" thing, but if you left a domain in your cart, within a day or so, it would be sold and available at a premium. Not sure if it was a GoDaddy tactic, or if their data was being sold and used by resellers.

  • I like them too, there are still a few movies that get a 3D release (although live action movies now are pretty much all just 3D conversion). Wikipedia lists 12 movies released this year that got 3D releases, 5 of those are animated movies, and 3 are Marvel movies. I missed the window on 3D home theater, but with the right tools I can watch the 3D releases I do have in VR, which is admittedly slightly less comfortable, but works since I'm the only person I know that actually likes watching in 3D anyway.

  • I kinda hope Valve gets put into some kind of employee-owned foundation when Gabe leaves. Doesn't need to be a non-profit, but it would be great if it could be set up in such a way that it can never be sold, only dissolved, and that if dissolved all IP and assets become open source/public domain.

  • I've got ADHD, I either binge eat for the dopamine, or I forget that I'm human and need food to survive, and then eat whatever's fast and easy when my body is finally signalling hunger at a level that I can't ignore. I try to keep some healthier options around for both scenarios, and it also helps to be around other people who have more regular schedules and I can follow their lead on meal times and join them socially. But when I'm alone, my personal diet is only "balanced" because it's so chaotic.

  • Pretty easy to make a hub device that you can plug the keyboard into and make it transparent to the user. Could even build in a keylogger to capture direct from the keyboard. The attacker would likely need physical access for that, so it wouldn't be as convenient as the thumb drive in the parking lot attack vector, but unless you're using PS/2 peripherals (or gluing those USB devices in too somehow), there's still a fairly open attack vector there, even if you are disabling unused ports in BIOS.

  • According to the article, they're using their AI cloud service to decode the data, so it's also likely so computationally expensive to decode that it won't be practical. Seems more like a gimmick to woo investors that won't actually ever see real world use, at least not any time soon. I suppose you could make the argument that you can back up data on it now, and hope reading it becomes more practical later, but then it's more of a supplement to tape backup, rather than a replacement.

  • Some stores have this now in the US via the Call2Recycle program from the RBRC. They were started to offer a convenient way to recycle NiCd batteries, but they take lithium batteries, and cell phones now as well. I've taken in batteries out of "disposable" vapes before (did the disassembly myself though, so they basically looked like any other small lithium battery). Definitely understand the concern about keeping a bin full of questionable batteries around while you wait for the box to be full enough to send in though, but there are plenty of stores where it's already a thing.

  • FaceTime would be nice to have on Android as well, I know it technically works via a browser, if you get an invite from an iPhone user, but it's such a bad experience for everyone. And I'm sure they do that because it's easy peer pressure "advertising" from Apple users who want to video call with Android users, but can't be bothered to put any work into using a compatible app, and instead blame Android users for the incompatibility.

  • Moved my personal site off of WordPress around 5 years ago because, for my single-user purposes it was resource heavy compared to a static site generator like Hugo or Pelican. I also had quite a lot of spam traffic, even with anti-spam plugins, and eventually I just disabled comments outright and the new user registration page. Admittedly, I was never that active with it, so I'm fully willing to accept that it could have been a me problem.

I also recall the general security of WordPress being a concern around that time, mostly because it was a popular target, so a big part of me moving to a static site generator was just to avoid having to constantly get on and update WordPress for security patches, when I only posted on the blog a few times a year at most.

Fediverse support has me considering returning to WordPress, but I'm curious how much upkeep running your own instance is these days.

  • I understand where the "everyone using adblockers, makes it worse for those who don't" argument comes from, and it generally makes sense. But I also have my suspicions that the expectations of infinite growth in publicly traded companies would probably have made it happen, even if nobody used adblockers. That being said, as someone who is giving YouTube money every month to not have ads, there's a reasonable argument that I'm enabling their bad behavior.

Fully agree on the 4k uploads thing though, and it also seems to be hurting the bitrate of lower resolutions. Up until around 2021 I primarily watched and preferred 480p when watching on tablets and sometimes even lower on my phone, for me it was a good balance of lower data usage and acceptable image quality. They've cut the bitrate so much at the low end though now, that sometimes even on a small phone screen I have to watch at 720p just to keep things from looking like they were recorded off a video conference from the early 2010s. Maybe 720p just is the new 480p and it's using a similar amount of bandwidth, but it feels like they're chasing the "bigger number better" crowd, rather than just defaulting to a reasonable resolution, with a high enough bitrate that most people won't feel the need to adjust it.
