What actually happens when servers are federated with one another? Does the content of each server get mirrored for redundancy, or does it just mean that users can see users, posts and communities from servers that are federated? When they defederate, does content that was previously visible to users just vanish completely, or is it merely that new content (created after defederation) will not be visible?
I've always gotten around by bicycle as where I've lived it's always been the easiest form of transport and I never felt that I wanted to have a car. Around 30 I was thinking it might be nice to move to the countryside, and for that I'd probably need to be able to drive, so I learned to drive. Some of the things I learned at driving school made me feel a lot more empathy for motorists actually, since I realised that sometimes I ride in their blind spot, or make drastic manoeuvres that could perhaps be alarming to them, so I think it improved my ability to cycle safely. Conversely, as I walk and cycle nearly all the time, as a driver I'm very careful around pedestrians and cyclists and always give cyclists plenty of space when overtaking.
To be honest, here in Kyoto, most people are not total assholes, and they probably still ride bicycles around their neighbourhood, so it's not considered an elitist or hipster mode of transport. I think this really helps everyone consider other road users as humans, regardless of the mode of transport. There are definitely still complete wankers around, of course, but I don't sense much aggression from any road users most of the time.
I'm going through some personal stuff and reading Lemmy helps take my mind off it, and due to the smallish size and lack of ads and other bullcrap it doesn't repel me as easily as other similar sites... I'm even using an app, which I never did for Reddit.
Their second album, Rise of the Eagles is amazing, but their lead guitarist left, they didn't make an album for another 7 years, and by then, it was too late :/
I also like The Cooper Temple Clause, but their third album after the bassist (Didz Hammond) left to do other stuff was shit, with a couple of decent tracks. Then they broke up.
GFWL was one of the worst attempts to compete with Steam I've ever seen, and also one of the worst software experiences I've ever had. I never got more than an hour into GTA4 because of it and how intolerant of bullshit software I am. Valve should have put their feet down back then and said "no secondary launcher dependencies".
Game pass is OK in terms of value if you play lots of games, but the software it uses is not great, despite being leagues better than GFWL. Windows also sucks, but I'm stuck with it due to work :/
Christ, why don't they combine their powers? This is Lemmy not fucking Reddit. I guess they can talk in RealTesla (note: I say "they" because I don't own a car/Tesla, not because I hate Elon, though he is certainly an insufferable wanker).
This is brilliant. I hope we see more countries doing the same thing :)
Maybe they could make accounts be tied to residency or citizenship, and perhaps have communities that only allow posting to those accounts to reduce bot spam and foreign meddling. Maybe that's a terrible idea, but it will be interesting to see where this goes, and if activity pub will be sufficient or need extending.
Still checking Reddit a bit, but mostly because I've been following the war in Ukraine there a lot. Not checking other subs as much and installed Lemmy Connect, which makes Lemmy nicer to use than Reddit
Maybe they aren't forcing us to buy shit directly, but a lot of the things they sell, particularly oil and gas are things we depend on because that's how society is built.
A lot of these completely blameless companies you are defending hire lobbyists to make it harder for individuals who are trying hard to make a difference to have any real effect on government policy. This ensures said companies can keep operating in the way they currently are to maximise profits.
Yes, we could all be doing more, but it's hard when huge multinational corporations are not only not working together with us to help, but spending billions of dollars to oppose legislation that could help because it would hurt their bottom line.
There has to be at least one celebrity that would rather be surfing the fediverse than doing celebrity stuff with other hot celebrities. I would be shocked to find out it was Margot Robbie, but not shocked if it was Nicholas Cage.
Although I loved R-Type 2 as a kid, I never really got into the first one for some reason - it was probably because I didn't have a pirated copy on my Amiga, whereas I did for R-Type 2. Both amazing games though, and I'm very glad R-Type Dimensions exists on Steam.
R-Type Delta is #1 R-Type for me though. Best level design, best music, best ships before it went completely nuts for Final.
You just reminded me of the random surveys that used to sometimes come in the mail for my Mum back before the internet was a thing. I flipped through a couple and it asked things like if you have a pet and what brand of cat food you gave them and all this totally random shit. I wonder what benefit to the home owner there was for filling such a bullshit survey in.
These days, Facebook would probably just use some AI to scan your photos and figure out if you have a cat and what brand of food it eats. You'd never know, and you gave away any defence the moment you uploaded the image.
