  • I'm not personally offended or anything, but it was the overall tone of the comment. Yea, the cursing was unnecessary, but then the accusation of using a corpo place that's taking advantage of the workers, and the multiple question marks does kinda contribute to an overall overly incredulous tone to the point of hostility towards the person you're responding to. Comes across as flippant and mocking (to me). Again, I don't really care, just thought I'd mention because sometimes people don't know how their text is perceived.

  • Oddly hostile reply, but ok. It's not required at all, but yes I have tipped plumbers and so have people I've known. I have had a plumber come out to take a look and tell me in like 5 minutes what was needed. He didn't charge me anything, even though I agreed to a nominal site visit charge, because the quote was astronomical and I wasn't going to go through with the project and he was only there a few minutes. I definitely tipped him and have used him twice since. He's very nice and knowledgeable and tbh it feels like he way undercharges for his work. Maybe it's just my personal experience. Not everyone should or has to or anything.

  • Aghhhhh. I hate this so much. The same with head start programs. Like every $1 spent on early childhood programs saves $7 (at the low end!) in the long run. We have the answers. Makes me want to scream honestly.

  • But, it is unlike that. Companies were changing the name of an existing feature to be more inclusive. Trump is more REMOVING data sets or data fields entirely. It's not renaming "gender" to "sex" because they believe there is no difference, it's completely removing climate change information from websites.

  • Yea, I wasn't agreeing with them or anything, just adding that perspective. I've worked places with and without those perks and though IME they boosted morale, it's definitely not a replacement for things like good pay or WFH options.

A lot of R policies and voters come from a place of making sure everyone's life is as hard as possible rather than making things better. They didn't have free/low cost education options? Neither can you. They had to go hungry? So should kids nowadays. They were beaten by their parents? They should get to as well. They have X difficulty or disability and it was not accommodated? Get rid of the ADA! To them, that's what equality means. That's why they scoff at the concept of both equality to access and equality of outcomes. They're both unfathomable to them. It's sad really. They think just because not everyone can live the same life, we shouldn't try to make them as comparable as possible, because from their perspective no one helped them (regardless of if that's the case or not).

  • For what it's worth, most red hats either didn't have a cushy job with these benefits, or have such a cushy job that they don't need/use the benefits. A lot of red hats were pissed people could work from home because they don't have the opportunity to (factory/field service/onsite work), so they feel like this is fine. This will probably disproportionately affect college educated libs. Rich CEOs have their own gyms, poor Rs never got the luxury.

  • The rerelease was the absolute bare minimum. Not a remaster or any updates of offensive text etc. it required the bare minimum effort on their part and they are gonna be raking in money that they could have put towards keeping people employed and making a new game, but they'll just pocket it and continue to coast off of nostalgia and name recognition. I don't know the specifics of the layoffs, so maybe they were truly necessary, but generally there's backlash to layoffs, and knowing that they are obviously not going to be hurting economically probably doesn't ease the backlash. I have no real opinion on it, other than corpos bad, just providing context.

  • This exactly. I'm in the us and I wish it weren't the case, but if I was in another country I would suggest just treating America the way we do Cuba. Cuba should not have the restrictions it does, but we ostensibly are doing that because of the government, so if people need to treat America like a rogue state to get things to change, then they should. No trades at all. Gas is our main export, so that is less than ideal, since a lot of countries are trying to stay away from Russian gas, though some have returned, but honestly you can't just make deals with fascists. Hitler was elected too. Just because someone is elected doesn't mean it should be acceptable to make deals on their terms.

  • For what it's worth, the wealthy people aligned with Trump want a collapse so they can create their own fiefdoms. Their fiefdoms will allow immigrants in to do the "undesirable" jobs. They don't want the US to be the richest most stable country, they want to OWN the richest most stable country, and they think tho only way to do that is start with deregulation and collapse. That part of the plan just happens to align with state actors who would love to see the US decline on a global scale. Really unfortunate that they're rich enough to not have to worry about if the plan works or not, they're happy to go along with the first part and just see what happens.

  • "Thanks Obama" was a meme used by people to bring attention to the fact that Obama was regularly blamed for things he had nothing to do with. Some really stupid people went so far as to talk about Obama's poor response to 9/11. So people started to just satirically say "Thanks Obama" basically indicating that blaming Obama lacked all meaning and credibility.

  • I understand that not everything can be easily transitioned to renewables, but my gosh when sanctions started I stupidly thought in addition to throwing money at the war effort, we would throw money into energy independence through solar, wind, and renewables. We didn't, of course, so now we're back to square one, minus so many lives needlessly taken.

  • Yes. Really sick of people pretending it's about the money. They want them to be miserable so they don't come back and so people stop associating America with a place of refuge. If they could get away with actually torturing them before sending them back they would, just to send a message that they are viewed as less than. It's gross, but it's literally the point?

  • Honestly, this is a strawman. There are so many reasons this is bad, we don't have to pretend they are logically inconsistent if they aren't actually. If you believe taxes should only be used for national defense/sovereignty/enforcing individual liberties on a national scale, then that is completely consistent. I'm not saying it's good, but if people are here illegally and their kids are getting free public education, then they are using resources "meant for Americans/legal residents" and they are "stealing" them. Wanting to stop that isn't inconsistent with not wanting M4A. M4A is good, and what Trump is doing is bad, but it's bad policy, not inconsistent.

  • Kind of, but you generally don't "expect different results" as the phrase goes. If anything you expect similar results and different results indicate something might have been done wrong. So science uses repeats to validate results, basically the opposite of the saying.

  • That's just it though. Like, ok my racist uncle wants RFK, but why do people with the power to make or break politicians care? My racist uncle is dumb and hates vaccines, but what is RFK promising to do for these other people? I just don't believe Elon musk and his ilk are actually antivax, so why are they pushing RFK so hard? I get playing to your base, but if it was just about getting someone who is antivax so Rs feel seen, then why does it seem like it's RFK or bust for these people?
