Let’s walk though the flow a typical user would experience:

1. Search “join mastodon”, find joinmastodon.org
2. Click “create account”…

SERVERS: Mastodon is not a single website. To use it, you need to make an account with a provider—we call them servers—that lets you connect with other people across Mastodon.

3. 95% of users will bail at this point.
4. Scroll down to the instance search UX.
5. Too many options. Do I want “all regions” or should I pick my own region? Do I want “all topics” or “general”? 95% of remaining users will bail.
6. Pick mastodon.social, sign up.
7. Confirmation email takes 12 minutes to arrive. 95% of remaining users will bail.
8. Confirm email, log in. Click search.

I suspect the actual energy cost of going up a few flights of stairs is entirely negligible compared to the subsequent reduction in energy usage for transportation of said human if their weight were reduced.

This is not an example of whataboutism. An example of that would be claiming “but Democrats also refused to take on debt for case XYZ”. The counter example here is entirely relevant to the claim that GOP don’t like to “saddle poor americans with debt”.

And yet they’re perfectly fine saddling us with financial bailout debts, which is a middle finger to anyone who couldn’t afford to create their own hedge fund or investment company.

I used LastPass Families for a few years, switched to 1Password for one year, and am now on Bitwarden. For me, it was the native MacOS app, so I can auto-fill apps besides just the browser (e.g. game and productivity software logins).

I love it because “it just works” (or rather, you have full control to make it work)

Yeah this used to be the case up until the early 2000s. Then Microsoft started making Windows much less technical (e.g. instead of showing Error: HRESULT 0x80070002 it just showed Sorry, something went wrong :(). Conversely, Apple started exposing more tooling for MacOS, e.g. tracing, terminal, etc. instead of just showing <bomb picture> if something went wrong.

(in Scrooge voice) And reduce the surplus population!

I’m not anti-FOSS but I do believe there’s a place for both it and paid/closed-source software to coexist. I don’t think proprietary software is inherently evil and am fine paying for it if I get a corresponding amount of value from its use.

This - I don’t care much about “corporate fuckery” in this context. The reason I left Reddit is that losing Apollo was sufficiently painful to prompt me to try something else. Honestly the pervasive anti-capitalist and FOSS-worshiping sentiments here are kind of off-putting.

It means that Aspartame is going to be added to the “Group 2B” classification list. It’s worth noting that “Red Meat” and “Alcohol” are in the much more severe “Group 1” list, so you should probably give up steak and beer before you ditch your favorite diet soda.

Because there are orthogonal performance properties and making them all get “better” with a higher “performance” number would be very expensive. Someone taking photos wants high capacity. Someone taking 8K video wants high write bandwidth. Someone playing games or as phone app offload storage wants high IOPS.

It’s why yo can buy a 1TB low-IOPS card for $40, or you can buy a 256GB high-IOPS card for $40. But if you want 1TB with high-iops, you’re going to pay about $200.

I spend 95% of my day on Debian but I don’t like it. Definitely “Tech Normie” according to this guide.
