  • Have to pitch it. DD:DA is what if you had Monster Hunter, added magic classes that feel great, and set it in a high fantasy setting. It takes some cues from jrpgs and feels less western than any soulsborne game, but still.

  • Hm, not keen on heavy politics or war. Was gonna recommend Malazan: Book of the Fallen but the first book starts out in a war. Still, good book, you might enjoy it.

Second book is a little different than what you're describing. Fool Moon from the Dresden Files series. Pulpy magical detective noire set in modern times, where magic is sort of accepted as a real thing.

  • Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, though less and less each time. Baldur's Gate 3 with my friends, Halo Infinite with my friends, and Skyrim for the nth time. Downloaded Wildlander and it's like a whole new game.

  • The night of the breakup I went to my best bud's house and talked and smoked for hours. After that, I worked on myself, started reading again, going to the gym again and finally got myself checked out by a psychiatrist and a psychologist. I had been putting all of that off for a long time and if there was ever a more cliche time to start, it was then.

Been about 2 years, half of what I was with her, and I still sometimes wish I had someone like her. I miss the connection I had with her. We went through a lot and at the time I thought I'd marry the girl. Then covid happened, some family tragedies, and suddenly our vibe was off. Sucks, but it woulda sucked more if it happened years later in life.

It was easier for me than it was for her, though. I've got issues regarding failure (not sure how else to word it). Whenever something might go tits up, I emotionally distance immediately. Job opportunities, dying pets, relationships, same defensive mechanism. Causes more trouble than it avoids, honestly, because I never know when to trust a gut feeling, or to stop being like this.

I still don't feel 100%, but I wasn't 100% when we broke up. Not looking for anything new, or to start up anything old again either.

  • Ditto on what others have said. Hours/price is a lousy metric because nowadays lots of games have some pretty toxic mechanics that incentivize sticking with a boring experience (New World, Assassin's Creed, etc.), inflating how much time you'd spend in a game that should be much shorter.

Games I've paid full price and I don't regret: Rimworld, Baldur's Gate III, Wasteland 2, Doom 2016, Celeste, Project Zomboid.

  • Others have recommended good recs, inc linux options. Personally, I'm not nearly tech enough for that. I got a Lenovo Legion in my first college year and it lasted right until a month after I turned in my thesis. Using multiple Adobe programs at the same time, and gaming in the afternoon when I had time (Rimworld, Hunt: Showdown, Rocket League, and a bunch of other games). Spent about 1300 in 2016 I think. Battery was garbage tier though. Less than half an hour, so if that's an issue, look at tons of reviews.

  • Have such a hard time upvoting this, solely because OP posted their budget and they could get something much better. Apple is nice, but you'll be paying out the wazoo to be limited to their ecosystem. Nice, intuitive ecosystem, wont lie. Really pays to be in it, but getting out is hell.

Honestly I'd rather do the extra leg work of finding good enough replacements for basic mac functionality than getting an apple product. I'm hella biased though.
