  • The Mexican president said earlier this week he would wait for Venezuela's election results to be reported fully before he recognized a winner.

^^ This is a much more accurate description of the situation. Mexico isn’t explicitly backing Venezuela’s regime, it’s refusing to take sides.

  • Title is misleading. A better title would be, “No JD Vance did not write about having sex with a couch in his memoir.”

For all we know, he may have fucked a plethora of furniture that did not make it into his memoir.

  • Nothing at all. They’re making the process hard enough that it will ensure a quick and easy nomination that isn’t dragged out for weeks, but they’re also making it democratic so it’s not just a coronation.

  • Under the rules approved by the Democratic National Convention’s rules panel Wednesday, presidential hopefuls have until Saturday evening to formally declare their candidacies and until Tuesday, July 30, to submit signatures from at least 300 delegates, with not more than 50 from a single state counting toward the threshold.

Voting will be conducted by electronic ballots sent to convention delegates. If only one candidate meets the petition requirements, which is likely considering how quickly the party has coalesced around Harris, voting is expected to begin on August 1, although it will be up to party leaders to set the times for voting to begin and end. If more than one candidate were to meet the requirements, party leaders can set a period of no more than five days for candidates to make their case to delegates. Delegates will have 36 hours’ notice before voting begins.

Essentially, they’re setting it up to make it fairly hard for anyone to challenge Harris unless they have widespread support, and get it over quick.

  • I was skeptical of the party’s ability to muster up a good candidate with Biden dropping out this late. And most of all, I wanted it to be Biden’s decision, not his party abandoning him.

Harris is coming out strong and gives me great confidence, though. So I respect Biden’s decision and am excited to vote for Harris, while I’d have settled to vote for Biden.

  • Yep, tool use evolved pretty early in animals (some insects and fish can use tools,) though of course humans have gone a step further and use tools to make other, better tools.

The smallpox vaccine was developed in 1796, nearly a century before the first phone and a good 20 years before the first bicycles. The tech in COVID-19 vaccines was discovered 20 years before the first iPhone, but people act like it was invented yesterday.
