  • Yeah - I mean. I’m not an economic analyst by any means, but a lot of people keep expecting a housing market “correction” in the U.S., but one keeps not materializing.

Usually consumer sentiment is self-fulfilling, but the market and the government seem intent on white knuckling their way through this, through whatever shenanigans they have to pull. Ultimately, I sort of think a hyperinflation scenario is becoming more likely.

  • That’s unlikely to happen, and in my layperson’s understanding, that’s probably as bad as a collapse in housing prices.

The U.S. housing market is currently supply constrained, according to this Brookings podcast.

Between the above supply constraints, corporations/venture capital funds snapping up houses, yo-yoing tariffs either driving up costs or creating uncertainty for builders, and climate change rendering millions of homes uninsurable/unfixable in case of disaster, the demand will only increase.

At the same time, a weakening dollar and soaring rates will make houses more expensive to buy and finance.

There will be a real-estate reckoning. I just don’t see it happening irrespective of other factors. I’m more worried about people who don’t have a house or don’t have some way to protect themselves from the economic hell that has yet to unfold.

  • Ah, sadly, no. That story was cut from the broadcast because we found a story about a dog that rides a motorcycle in Sioux City.
“Market research” by our corporate owners says that white collar crime doesn’t bring in the advertising dollars unless the victims are other wealthy people.

  • For the U.S., the decisive blow came with the Citizens United ruling, although it’s not unreasonable to suggest the refusal to punish Nixon during watergate signaled that the rule of law was merely a suggestion. That kicked off a whole cascade of political and legal maneuvering to get both the legislative and societal landscape into such a contortion that it would willingly hand away the entire nation to vulture-capitalists.

  • Because they don’t believe in choice, freedom, or even democracy. They merely support the ideal and facilitate the illusion.

Anything that empowers voters to either dilute the two-party hegemony (where both parties are accountable to the same pool of donors) or elect party members that haven’t been carefully vetted by insiders is a threat to entrenched power structures. Adding roadblocks now ensures that transitions to better systems are made that much more challenging via peaceful and lawful means.

  • Oh, no! It’s not just harassment!

You can destroy someone’s life and livelihood because you think they’re gay!

Getting fired from a job at a time when the federal gov is actively cutting social supports, and intentionally driving the economy to ruin when most U.S. citizens have meager savings (if any), and are dependent on employer provided health care is an instant path to free fall for most people! Unless those peasants have family that is willing and able to support them, or a high demand skill that will overlook a recent firing (an automatic D/Q on most HR systems), they are going to lose their ability to feed themselves, pay for their housing, and their transportation in this car-poisoned society.

It’s not merely a little ‘fuck you’ but you can end their relationships, destroy their health, prevent them from working in their chosen field, and make them die on the streets! Even barring the most extreme outcomes, the health and financial implications from the stress or loss of income can permanently adjust the trajectory of their life (and the life of everyone that is close to or dependent on them) downward.

    Exciting times for soulless bigots!

  • I don’t disagree that there is a strategy of downplaying not just Biden’s, but every politician’s health conditions.

I used to have this absolutely incredible writing professor, who, at 85, told us on the first day of class that he was dying, and had been for 4 years. He even had a blog about his reflections on mortality that he invited us to read. He had prostate cancer. I don’t remember the details, but they couldn’t operate to remove it or do chemo, but it was the kind that is hormone sensitive. They gave him a drug that destroyed his body’s ability to produce testosterone, so the cancer just stopped growing. He died at 90 - 9 years after his diagnosis. 10% extra life for him.

No two people and prognosis’ are alike but the possibility exists they might be telling the truth about managing it.

  • Sadly, they aren’t misusing the words because they’re stupid. They’re misusing the words because when the words are applied to them, they can claim the words are meaningless. Just like they did with all the accusations about Hillary in his first term, about Biden during Biden’s presidency, and now about anyone else.

  • I had a threesome with an HR lady! Her hair is purple and she has a polyamory infinity symbol wrapped by bands around her wrist in the colors of the bisexual flag.
She’s a cool lady. Great friend and hates being a tool for the man. She’s cool people’s version of Ron Swanson.

  • This is a weird connection to make, but since this started happening, my wife and I have been unintentionally saving money.

I don’t think we’re doing it ‘on purpose’, but instead of the usual stream of random frivolity, we’re just sort of trimming back, and as a result, find ourselves with extra money to transfer to savings when we look at our accounts.
I think we’re both just trying to be ready, should we need extra resources for whatever reason.

  • My people.
I feel a kinship with each and every one of you.

I’ve always had a rocky relationship with my mom. It took years to just not care about her.
After she died, amongst her things I found evidence that multiple people had told her to get me tested for ADHD when I was a child. She opted not to, but after I graduated college 10 years after my peers, she told me not that she was proud of me, but that when my sister was a kid, people had told her to get her “tested” (she didn’t elaborate), but instead looked me square in the eyes and said “but I knew none of my babies were retarded!” It’s clear the story wasn’t about my sister.

I might actually hate her more now than I did when she was alive.
