  • We've been using neural nets (aka the current hotness) to recognize hand-written zip codes since the 90s.

Not to go way offtop here but this reminds me: Palm's "Graffiti" handwriting recognition was a REALLY good input method back when I used it. I bet it did something similar.

  • There's a fun open source app called WhoBIRD that identifies birds by their calls in real time!

It's actually really impressive and a lot of fun identifying the local birds. This is a use of learning models I can totally get behind. :D

  • Everyone's convinced their thing is special, but everyone else's is a done deal.

I'm sad it makes me sound like such a pie-in-the-sky hippie when I say I think everyone's contributions are not just special, but essential, and that's why this whole mentality pisses me off so much, especially in the indie space.

    • Artists are like "Finally, I can have Ai do my code! But good art takes a special touch."
    • Coders are like "Finally, I can have Ai do my art! But good code takes a special touch."
    • "Idea Guys", who never learned anything but want to make a game because they like playing them, are leading the charge. They're so excited to put everyone who makes those games out of a job because they think they'll finally get to "achieve their dreams" with freaking prompts.

But for the people who do the work, why the heck are skilled artisans so ready to sell out their comrades? This "highly competitive" nonsense, and one-great-glorious-man myth has simply turned us on each other, when the people with pointless bullshit jobs are somehow still employed, simply serving to harass and bother the people getting things done.

Meanwhile the only task where current AI seems truly competitive is porn.

Well it sure has a heckuva data set from every possible angle and lighting setup, doesn't it? 😬 Lol

  • You know what's freaking terrifying?

I use Nextdoor on occasion (a social media app specifically for localized neighborhoods), because it helps with safety or lost pets or something occasionally...

...but lately there's been some tesla vandalism going on, and there's SO MANY comments like "Give them 20 years" and "Send them straight to El Salvador." and "Domestic terrorism!"

I used to resent isolation and lack of community...but now I really don't wanna meet my neighbors anymore...

I want to believe a quieter majority of us aren't cool with shirking due process and shipping U.S citizens to foreign prison camps, if that wasn't bad enough, for property damage of all justifications...but geeze.

  • Kinda disagree on Never Split the Difference! Listened to the audiobook of it and found it to be a good primer on the basics of negotiation, something I profoundly lacked, was never taught, and had that used against me on more than one occasion.

Nothing mind-blowing, but for the price of free from my local library, I feel like the techniques gave me a little confidence in the process.

I do agree that a lot of these books could have easily been WAY shorter but try to sell you on value by page count lol.

  • Badger, badger....

  • Dunno maybe this was localized but

Tunak Tunak Tun was declared the anthem of my California middle school computer graphics class. Lots of FlashMX tribute animations and such.

It apparently went way beyond that, as we saw the Draenei rocking that dance in WoW: Burning Crusade. :D

    It still freaking slaps. :D

It was a great time for foreign music, as Gary's silly dance and lip sync to the "numa numa" song was proliferating everywhere.

I wonder if a lot of this was from all the fun file sharing and explosion of P2P networks going on? I don't miss how easy it was to catch malware but I do miss some very particular feeling about those days...

  • Same. I just wanna work towards requiring less of it and enjoying real plants that aren't masquerading as something else.

Black bean burger patty? Let's go!

Molded soy isolate thing engineered to seem like beef or shrimp or cheese or whatever? Gut rebellion.

  • I'm so happy seeing so many indie titles that are all about LAN and split-screen play. It's definitely happening! You just won't always see it front-paged and have to keep an eye out. :)

Edit: Plus, GoG brought back stuff like Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, Unreal Tournament 99 and 2k4, that are still an absolute blast. :D

  • I'm a huge Krita fan! But like others I mostly use it for the drawing and painting.

How is it as an alternative to GIMP? (Which I use for simple cut and pastes and that kinda thing.) I haven't actually been able to figure out where the wall is that says "No, use GIMP for this."

Does GIMP maybe have better filters and layer operations and that kinda thing maybe...?
