  • Not all my tools are battery operated, corded jigsaw, sander, miter saw, table saw, etc. Not all the batteries hold the same purpose and would need a different charger either way. An electric drill and leaf blower need entirely different levels of power. In the grand scheme of things I think I only overlapped charging systems once.

  • Meh, I have Bosch, Ryobi, DeWalt, Ego, Ridgid. Why not just by the best according to cost/benefit for each thing. Corporate loyalty is dumb. I get the battery thing, but I'm pretty sure I got most of the tools at a good enough price to make the different batteries irrelevant.

  • If Iran won a war against Israel at least some of the more extreme in Iran want extermination. You could potentially be trading an incredibly one-sided war with a possible second Holocaust. Many of the most extreme political factions in surrounding countries want Israel wiped off the map and replaced with a Muslim theocracy. If you destabilize the area you're risking worse than is currently happening.

I don't think that means the USA should be giving Israel a blank check, but I'm also not a foreign policy expert and I suspect the diplomatic situation is far more complex than you and I can comprehend sitting comfortably on our couch. Especially since holding Israel accountable is also not as popular domestically as it seems in online communities like this one. So any diplomatic pressure has to be behind closed doors.

  • The British repeatedly gave blankets they new had smallpox. Todays evidence is that nothing happened, the virus was already dead. But it's worth mentioning that from a Native American perspective this still happened, they received blankets and shortly after they had an epidemic. Whether they contracted it from the blankets or not is sort of besides they point, they intended to infect Native Americans with smallpox and local tribes ended up having a smallpox epidemic shortly after. Maybe they found another way, or maybe someone got infected by coming in contact with the British during one of the conflicts. But does it really matter? With or without blankets they still murdered millions (thought to be the largest genocide in human history) of native people on their own land simply because they wanted to steal all the land. They didn't need smallpox to do that, they did it with guns, and forced starvation.

  • USA, Minnesota. People hug but ask if you're a hugger first.

I think it's funny that only 2 options were given. In India the norm is clasping your own hands together and saying namaste, nomoshkar or some other greeting. No touching. In east Asia a very slight bow is incredibly common.

  • Ms Bellucci’s menu includes champagne, smoked salmon, caviar and turkey

So don't serve expensive champagne and caviar. Thanksgiving does not have to cost $100+ a person.

But this title and messaging misses another point they seemed to be making, that many woman get stuck with the obligation and don't actually get to enjoy the holiday, so they might as well get paid for it. Seems like the easy answer is that everyone pitches in and helps. Seems odd to charge people instead of just setting the expectation that everyone shares the burden.

  • I don't know where "around these parts" is for you but I've heard plenty of people refer to themselves as indian or American Indian instead of Native American in my lifetime. Really many people would prefer you use their actual tribe name over either one, but it's most often white people getting bent out of shape over using "indian" in my experience.

  • You're worried about kids seeing a nipple while they watch a streamer turn their enemy into a bloody mess. If we can accept kids seeing constant violence in their media, I really don't think nudity is a big deal. We have our priorities all messed up.

  • For much of my adult life I've smelled good with or without deodorant and rarely sweat much. Lately whether because of a hormonal change or something wrong I'm unaware of, my smell has changed completely. No amount of deodorant helps, no amount of showering helps. In fact, I often end up using deodorant as a last resort, because whatever bacteria is taking over seams to turn all types of deodorant into vinegar & onions in a matter of minutes, as if it's feeding off the deodorant. The smell seems to be improving over time, according to other people, not just me. But it has given me additional sympathy for people going through this. When its bad, I can lather my body head to toe in the shower 4 times and come out smelling the same as I went in. Sometimes smells are hard to tackle. You shouldn't assume it's a hygiene thing.

  • I actually read through the survey data, the reason Israel is shown so much is they are clearly showing a correlation (not necessarily causation) between opinions on Israel and denial of the Holocaust. I think what they where trying to show with the data is that it can sometimes be hard to decouple the two conversations. While I don't think you can accomplish that with a survey, that has been my entire lift experience.

I'm Jewish, generally leftist/socialist, and firmly against what Israel is doing to Palestine, but it's impossible for me to be actively a part of any anti Israel war activism. Because whenever I end up in that space, in my experience, about a quarter of the people there are actively courting antisemitic beliefs and the conflict seems too convenient for them. Another quarter seem to be duped by anti semitic propaganda. It puts Jews that are against what is happening to Palestinians in a very uncomfortable space. I'm always having to make sure I understand which type of person I'm talking to.

The problem is that our society fails at navigating nuance. You are either pro Israel or anti-israel and a lot of people equate that with pro-jew or anti-jew. Most people under 40 don't even know 1% of the history of that region but have broad beliefs about exactly how the situation should be resolved. As always ignorant divisiveness breeds resentment, and it shapes belief.

I don't think we can ignore the data and hand wave it away. People with resentment towards what israel is doing absolutely are more susceptible to antisemitic propaganda, just as people who are against what Hamas is doing are more susceptible to anti Muslim propaganda, it would be silly to think otherwise. That doesn't mean everyone on either side is some kind of bigot, but it does mean people should think critically about the rhetoric and divisiveness and be careful about being manipulated by propaganda.

Most importantly people need to read the recent 150 years of history of that region and really try to understand what's going on there before making broad sweeping statements that completely ignore historical context, otherwise you're at risk of just adding fuel to a raging fire.

  • Anyone old enough to remember Bill Clinton's campaign knows this is complete hogwash. Clinton had no chance of winning the nomination until suddenly he was the front runner riding a wave of popularity seemingly overnight. No one owes a single candidate their allegiance just because you see them as closely aligned, and they have every right and reason to believe they can win. Additionally candidates also choose to stay in to force their policy positions onto the party platform, something Sanders also did well past a likely winning outcome. I really think you're only seeing this from a self centered perspective without considering the situation from any other candidates perspective. Its honestly very Bernie bro culty.

  • A bit off topic from your point, but there is no way to get screwed if you just invest for 10+ years in all market index funds from something like vanguard. The only way you're going down in that situation is if the whole system goes down for good. Also government bonds go well above inflation. There are options for regular people, but both of those options likely mean financially supporting things you might not believe in. Like a imperial government and a dirty energy focused economy. The only way it's a casino is if you buy individual stocks. Index funds are the safest way for regular people to make more money than inflation, you just have to be willing to let your money sit for a long time. You don't invest in index funds if you're unwilling to wait for the boom and bust cycles to pass a few times.
