You don’t need a vpn with these. Evidence gathered by wiretapping isn’t permissible in court. They need you to send them copyrighted material to sue. At least in the us

I tried out some of these today. Umbrel, CapRover and Tipi aren't on your list yet.

They look beautiful and have some nice prebuilt installations but it gets really ugly soon as you need a custom component. I just deleted it all and switched over to portainer.

I tried installing gnome to rdp into my oracle free tier server and it wasn't remotely (hehehe) worth it. Very laggy and direct interfaces are just far superior so no to that as well. Plus it takes up precious space and resources.

I think the best option is a dashboard like dashy or homepage to keep your service interfaces together. Portainer is excellent for container management.

These weird "OS" style container platforms are really bizarre and I don't think too well thought out. They're kinda toys really. Looked really amazing but they show their limitations really quickly.

I'm in the same boat and looking at options. I've benchmarked several options tht provide their own relays, and am in the process of setting up my own relays to test out on oracle free tier vps, which will probably be the best option as all the bandwidth that vps can handle will be dedicated to you and not shared. That said I've found tailscale to perform the best and twingate to perform the worst. I'm looking at netbird and netmaker but they're extremely buggy and difficult to get going. Netbird is just busted in so many ways. Netmaker's relays can't get past my cgnat. Self hosting both of these should work but I've not tried it yet. The absolute easiest to set up has been tailscale though, can't go wrong with that. For most use cases except for handling massive amounts of data, tailscale should be more than sufficient. That said, I'm looking to try selfhosting netbird, netmaker and headscale to see how those perform compared to tailscale's own relays.

Wow, Orion is pretty slick! And Orion+ doesn't offer any actual features aside from early access and input on the roadmap. So far so good. Custom buttons is really cool, built in tree style tabs is slick. Also!! orion has workspaces that are as good if not better than vivaldi's! This is really slick, thanks for sharing

That's definitely a good call. Before I even had a NAS, I'd just throw some movies and stuff on my macbook when I had to travel. Problem is that when you're loading it up, you think you know what you'll want to watch and then later you just wish you had different choices.

It's the closest I've been able to find to vivaldi. Unfortunately no one does workspaces as good as vivaldi, but their implementation deleted all my workspaces one day, with no back up, and that was after several other total wipes of my windows/tabs.

Ah ok makes sense. Yeah it's definitely not latency or throughput causing stuttering for me. Gonna definitely be the anemic CPU. Luckily I have an extra laptop that I haven't used in years that would make a perfect addition to the homelab. Can just through linux on it and use it as a plex/roon server

Shit, I run plex of my synology ds1621+ and it chokes on 4k regularly. This is with a cabled connection. It's almost certainly the CPU though. These things are weak as hell. What're you running plex on ?

There's also BlendOs but it's a buggy mess right now. Has promise though

Pretty cool concept actually. upcycling old tech does seem to be a selfhosting hobby. I see a lot of criticism that I think doesn't really see the value proposition. You should be able to root the device and install a new OS. I wonder how limited the bandwidth would be though, and whether it'd be worth the cost to get adapters, if they exist, to allow more throughput. I do like the concept though.
