It’s hard.

My brother was deep in to this shit when our mom died. He was living with her and had no where to go.

So he started living with me.

I had to be an asshole about it at first. IE: in reference to the conservative media he’d watch all day I said something to the effect of “turn that hateful shit off or find somewhere else to fucking live” at one point.

Once I got him to reduce the amount of bullshit he watched it was easier to point out a couple things that would resonate with him. Like:

How the media he’s watching is always telling you how you should feel about the news. I didn’t tell him what to watch, but explained that journalists aren’t supposed to be telling you how to feel about the news, this is a manipulation tactic.

I also pointed out that the media he was consuming was constantly telling you what “the leftists” think. I told him that if he wants to know what leftists think, he should listen to leftists, not the people trying to manipulate him.

I also have gay friends. When some of them were coming over for a get-together I said, “if that’s going to be a problem, stay in your fucking room.”

I kept pointing out how corporations are fucking us over and asking why the media he was watching never talked about that.

I got him spending more time outside and just generally being away from technology for a few hours every day.

I’ve also been helping him learn to live with a disability. Having to help navigate government supports for him is a good thing to reference when conservative views on health care come up.

He’s not a card-carrying leftist yet, but he doesn’t get mad about gay people existing any more, so that’s a win. He now acknowledges that it’s the corporations fucking us with the help of both parties. It’s been almost 3 years now and he’s stubborn, but I keep at it.

I think the short version is: get them to realize they’re being manipulated and get them to start questioning the conservative narrative, but make sure they know you care about them at the same time.

Editing to add: using their language helps a lot too.

Don’t say: “Trans rights are human rights” Say: “Those are your countrymen fighting for the freedom to live their lives as they see fit, just like you.”

Maybe we should have given the teachers guns…

The writers strike didn’t last until 2008, which is when Breaking Bad came out and suddenly TV was good again. Maybe even better than before.

It’s reality shows all over again. (When it comes to TV anyway)

Remember the early 2000s sitcoms kinda went away because reality shows were the hot new thing and cheaper to produce?

For better or worse, in Canada we don’t vote for PM, it goes to the leader of the party.

Both the other parties are clearly in the pocket of corporations. The NDP held the Liberal’s feet to the fire and got us dental care.

That alone is reason enough to vote for them in my opinion.

Well, it’s like this:

We’ve been flip-flopping back and forth on Conservatives and Liberals since forever. No one’s happy.

If it weren’t for the NDP agreement with the Liberals we wouldn’t be getting dental care, which comes in to effect for the rest of Canadians this year, and pharmacare which is supposed to come later.

These are real tangible benefits that every Canadian will be able to see and feel and that means more to me than a carbon tax.

You’re worried about Singh name-calling? The dude is getting our teeth fixed and he’s not even PM. Focus on the real things.

It’s money laundering

I found a 2010 MacBook in a recycle bin. I happened to have a spare charger at home.

I took it, installed Linux, and now I have 3 rescued laptops brought back to life with Linux.

3 more and I’m going to start hosting LAN parties (WAN parties, I guess)

Bucky was Cap for a couple years in the early 2010s. There’s precedent.

I think he’s signed a deal. I have no evidence and this is a compete guess, but I think he’s agreed to let them use AI for his voice so that once he’s passed away they can keep using Red Hulk (in Hulk form at least) and his family can cash cheques.

Honestly, I feel like games have been getting too big. The ends of RPGs always feel like a slog these days.

Maybe it’s because every game thinks it needs a 3 act denouement. Maybe it’s because there’s 100x the games coming out now compared to when I was young and the feeling of wanting to get to the next one is rushing me. Or maybe I’m just plain getting old.

In any case, I’m ok with shorter games.
