  • I googled it instead. Loving the first few entries. Specifying only the first Ender book but the entire (Frank Herbert) Dune series is 👌. The fact that the rest of the Dune series is mostly ignored is criminal. The first book is far from the best and the series varies so much in setting and tone that it stays interesting to me after many readings.

  • Malazan is a slog. Definitely don't read unless you want to power through imo. I've tried multiple times and while I think it's well written I never seem to stay hooked. So many character/location changeups early in the book and none of them hooked me.

Probably the best book I've never finished though?

  • I too do not enjoy Sanderson. GRR Martin has a series of books called the hedge knight. They are not exactly fantasy but medieval fiction taking place in the game of thrones universe. The tone and writing is very different from aSoIaF so don't shy away if you aren't into those. Pretty short but I found them to be very endearing books and might scratch the itch.

It's weird I can't recommend a single 'traditional' fantasy book despite being quite interested in the genre. I've never found one that combines good world building with a writing style I enjoy. Quite sad to think about tbh.

  • Suckerpinch. In summary, he makess weird computer science videos. His videos are quite varied and some of them are incredibly hard to follow, they're often a real paper he has written in video form. However he has a great sense of humour and the topics he chooses are really weird and funny. His best few videos are 10s.

  • Most runs in general do not get scrutinized unless something about the submission is suspicious in itself. The community is very tight knit and there is nothing to gain from being on the leaderboard but clout.

  • I just mean we need a publicly version of YT. I am aware the logistics of this are ridiculous, the global nature of yt as you point out is a major hurdle. No country I'm aware of has even managed to nationalize their infrastructure so... ya.

  • Ok first of all, yes Futurama is dated by its pop culture references, that's what happens when you make pop culture references. Second, Fry travelling into the future is used to make fun of the 20th century. The show isn't about the future, it's about now. The world of the future isn't supposed to be believable it's used as a vehicle for pointing out the absurdities of the 20th century.

But most of all it's just a silly comedy with clever writing. Most Futurama memes are of one off gags and not what made the show truly funny. One of the huge mistakes they made with the newer seasons was constantly referencing old jokes, which is essentially the writers says "hey remember when this show was actually funny?".

But I'm ranting now. Futurama has been memed to shit and the fan base embarrassingly loves to hype up the show and it's all its PHD having writers. None of that captures what makes the show great. The first run of the show was just a solid, funny, witty show with a heart of gold.

This clip epitomizes Futurama for me.

  • It's definitely one of those 'slice of life' / vibe movies. You either like the atmosphere, mood, and characters, or you don't. Personally I love the movie but I can understand why it has mixed reception.

Similarly in my brain is Dazed and Confused. There is hardly a plot to be found in that movie but it makes me nostalgic for a time before I was born. Something about it just draws me.

  • What you describe about Bojack is frustrating but I think very realistic and kind of the core of the show. Bojack is flawed in so many ways and has a lot of baggage weighing on him. Him struggling to fix his flaws despite being entirely aware of them is very relatable.

If fixing flaws was as easy as someone holding up a mirror for you then no one would struggle with personal demons. But it's not. It takes humility, self awareness, and constant self reflection to make progress. Bojack has an array of personality faults and trauma to overcome and it's no surprise he struggles the way he does.

It's the best depiction of mental health and addiction I've encountered.
