  • Can confirm. Am pretty smart, have wealthy parents, slept walked into well paying job after years of depression/inactivity because I had a safety net that meant I didn't need to slave away at a minimum wage job to avoid destitution.

  • Ah yes, feminism, an ideology that consists solely of extremist views. I'm not even well versed in feminism and I know that Andrea Dworkin is quite extreme and is a polarizing figure.

If you have reduced feminism to the views of a single extremist than you really need to get your shit together.

  • Autonomous cars really will be a fucking nightmare for traffic and I don't think people understand this. Traffic is one of the biggest reducers of car trips, it's why induced demand is a thing. People avoid trips if they don't want to deal with the traffic and people pay for expensive parking to avoid driving around looking for a cheap spot.

Autonomous cars would enable so many trips that would otherwise be avoided. Don't want to look for parking? Your car will do it. Don't want to sit in traffic for 30 mins to get to the grocery store? You can watch youtube while your car drives you. Don't want to take your kid to a friends house? The car will drive them.

EVs are not going to solve climate change and autonomous cars are not going to fix traffic. These problems are only solved by reducing car dependency and the faster people suck it up and accept that the faster we actually start working on solutions instead of tech bro nonsense that only solves the problem of how to concentrate even more wealth in the 0.1%.

  • Drones are loud as fuck and have a host of other issues. People will fucking riot if they have to start listening to drones fly around all day.

An eco friendly option that actually makes sense is cargo bikes. Even land based drone delivery makes more sense than flying drones. This shit is probably never happening.

  • I don't agree with you focusing on that aspect of this interaction but it is interesting to see how many downvotes you got just for pointing out the gender dynamics of men talking over women. Men can be really sensitive to that sort of thing. Source: I am man.

  • I agree with you but this doesn't exactly counter their point. The scientific explanation for sex was not discovered until recently but the biological differences have been obvious since the dawn of time. Gender is a social construct yes, but it's framed around real biological differences and ignoring that is.. idk. Confusing and kind of irresponsible? The social constructs we've formed are heavily influenced by the biological differences between the sexes and you can't just wave that away and expect people to understand what you're saying.

Talking about gender being a social construct is honestly pretty mind bending, even if you are entering the conversation 100% open minded.

  • I'll bite. Biological sex is real. When people say gender is a social construct they're talking about everything that (traditionally) gets attached to being biologically female/male. Acceptable clothing, behaviour etc. Those are social constructs and if you disagree you likely haven't thought about it hard enough. Different cultures put different expectations on gender so good luck trying to find any gender expectations that apply to all of them.

Framing gender as social construct is not the same as telling you masculinity or femininity don't exist, or that you shouldn't embody those traits if you want. It's simply pointing out that our ideas on gender are social fabrications that feel real because of how ingrained they are into our culture and upbringing.

Being cis and embodying traditionally male/female traits is perfectly acceptable and nobody wants you to stop doing that. This conversation is about saying hey, not everyone feels comfortable with traditional gender constructs and that's ok too.
