  • I love illustrations like this cause at a certain point numbers just don't work for most people. Like yeah everybody knows $3 million is a lot money. But the average person doesn't realize just how gigantic that number actually is in reference to the average person. You bump that up to $150 billion for someone like bezos and it's literally an inconceivably big number. It all just falls under the category of "a lot" until you see stuff like this.

  • And then the inevitable day or week or so where it's unseasonably cold before we barrel into another couple months of record breaking heat. But during those weeks I will be told innumerable times "so much for global warming! This idiots don't know anything!"

  • I'm genuinely curious at this point if that point even exists. Like, I've had legitimate conversations with multiple people and i've asked them "what would need to happen for you to believe in human's causing climate change?" The answer is generally something along the lines of "I'm not sure it's even possible for humans to have that big of an effect on the earth."

I would imagine there are tons of people out there who think the same, people with VERY deep pockets and in equally powerful positions that would never change course on their money making machines. Literally the only way I see substantial change happening is if it becomes incredibly profitable.

  • "Unfortunately, Florida's insurance market has become challenging in recent years," the company said in a statement emailed to CBS MoneyWatch. "Last year's catastrophic hurricane season contributed to an unprecedented rise in reinsurance rates, making it more costly for insurance companies to operate."

This is hilarious and sould crushingly unsurprising. People actually ended up needing to use the insurance the companies were offering soooo they are just no longer offering it. Proving once again (for the millionth time) insurance companies have absolutely zero desire or feel any moral obligation to actually help people. It is 100% purely a money making operation. The millisecond they actually have to help any of their customers out, they will bend over backwards to get out of it and if they can't, they'll just leave entirely and not insure you. Beautiful. God I hate insurance so much.

  • Yeah I feel like this is just like when the body gets a fever to get rid of a sickness. The earth is just getting a little fever to get rid of our dumbasses real quick. Then it will go right back to normal and be completely fine.

  • It's the same for 99.999% of people. There ain't a person on the planet that exercises automatically lol. "Oh geeze I didn't even realize I just ran those 10 miles it's just such a habit I didn't even think about it."

Sure, there are certain tiny things that you form a habit with like maybe saying "you too" any time somebody says for you to "have a nice ___" which explains why sooo many people have that embarrassing moment when like a waiter drops food on your table and is like "enjoy your meal" and you say "thanks, you too!" Something like that is this person's version of a habit.

But other things like brushing your teeth or cooking dinner or exercising or picking up your kids from school or something isn't an automatic action the way it's described here for almost everyone. I'm sure there's some huge outliers out there that swear they do all these things completely unconsciously or whatever but I'd argue they are an outrageously small minority.

I think this is a combination of conflating multiple things into one generic definition of what a habit is, and then attributing that trait to the general public unanimously.

  • A completely pre written story with an existing fan base that will give you tons of money if you just make it look slightly better and can even break it up into a bajillion parts to make even more money... And they're willing to do that?? Just for us??
