  • Yeah, I'm thinking they'll do the "he attempted to escape/kill one of his guards in transit, we had to shoot him" thing - I feel like the entire entourage of armed guards will provide cover for the news networks to go "well he was incredibly violent, anyone could've seen this coming".

  • There's also the fact that the prisons are NOTABLY deadly. So if the administration winds up actually being forced to release a person, they can just have an "unfortunate accident" and now that's ANOTHER court case to determine whether they have to ship the body back (which again, is easily handled by "well it's in one of these mass graves.")

  • Pretty much this. The US will now end up with an automotive ecosystem (including fun things like ambulances, firetrucks, buses, etc) where everything is built as cheaply and dangerously as possibly profitable (see: Pinto et al). Sure, the autos we build here aren't going to be able to be sold anywhere with a functioning regulatory body, but that's OK because we managed to save $20 on each car we build by not having to include pesky things like airbags or a steering column that won't impale you in a crash or a body that won't telescope into you and crush you.

  • The plan is "get the other countries to capitulate and offer me everything". This is a classic Mafia power play - strangle out trade for everyone, show how much power you can exert with one stroke of a pen, and then walk it back as a flex. The message is "give me everything I demand or I can strangle trade with your country from the US" - this unfortunately only works when your diplomatic position is good enough to get OTHER countries to agree to the same thing, like with Cuba or Russia (sorta).

  • Also, most voting rights advocates will point to the 24th Amendment, (arguably rightly) claiming that requiring ID that you must pay the state to acquire constitutes a poll tax.

To explain: when black men got the right to vote after the 15th Amendment was passed, lots of states tried lots of ways to make sure they couldn't. One thing that was legal was requiring a fee to be paid in order to vote - this had the knock-on effect of making sure poor white people, who often sympathized with and voted with black people, couldn't vote either. These fees were known as poll taxes, ostensibly to pay the people running the poll and defray the state's cost of administering the election. Normally this was a nominal amount, but if you were a sharecropper or subsistence farmer who was literally counting half-pennies to get by month to month, the quarter that the poll tax required was enormous. Many states kept these poll taxes in one form or another for decades, and they were declared unconstitutional in 1966 by the SCOTUS in Harper v Virginia Board.

If I wanted a Real ID like this executive order required, I would be paying about $80 on the low end, assuming I do not need to pay to acquire any of the several documents I need to prove I am who I am.

  • Or worse, flee the country and die in some slightly-less-luxurious house. The man is a narcissist, and from having a grandma that was probably NPD, they don't give up a thing once they have it.

  • They're not. This would primarily be a blow to PUBLIC education, which is what this kleptocracy hates. Private schools will work to snap up teachers, and several dozen people who own the private school networks will get a little bit richer. The knock on effect of "uneducated people are easier to lie to and manipulate" is just that - an unintended knock on.

  • They also don't stay in one place, and can just randomly show up in a place when you're, say, doing stealthy stuff. Suddenly assassinating a whole outpost of orcs becomes "aww shit, Feldûsh is here, and he's immune to stealth attacks" or '"oh no Roggvir just showed up, he's riding a warg and so are the other 4 guys he pals around with".

  • The issue is what this takes. You need:

1 document proving you are who you say (this cannot be a state or federal ID. I used my birth certificate, which can be difficult and time consuming to acquire if you don't have access to it.)

2 different documents from different sources proving you live where you say (this would need to be a bank statement or utility bill)

You must also provide a document proving your Social Security Number (this can be hard if you don't have the card - getting a new one is similarly painful), AND if your legal name has changed from what's on your birth certificate, you need to provide attestation of that (marriage or divorce paperwork, etc).

So you could potentially need up to 6 documents from 6 different sources, it's still up to the DMV to accept them, and you don't actually get the card for at least another 2-3 weeks at minimum. There's also a fee - in my state it would cost me about $80 after taxes.

  • Reminder that West Virginia exists exclusively because of slavery. Especially that part of Appalachia was a HUGE haven for self emancipated people and free black people alike, because if you get deep enough into the mountains, you basically cease to exist as a legal entity unless people want to put a significant amount of effort into reaching you and the same amount in extricating you.

  • This is the final play of the segregationists. The real, hidden heart of the argument from a lot of people against the DoEd is "the schools aren't allowed to be segregated anymore and that's wrong."

Mark my words, you'll see schools rapidly segregated by race and gender soon enough. Fathers and mothers, I hope you're prepared to teach your daughters how to read and write, because all they'll likely be getting within the next 5 years is home-ec and how to be a submissive wife - and that's even if your state allows them to attend school.
