  • It was Flavor-Aid, a knockoff brand.

    Because it was cheaper.

Jones wanted the whole thing to be cheap, because the man was a skinflint. The entire massacre, including the bullets that some people wound up with after refusing to drink, was done for less than $20 adjusted.

  • It's actually a worse idea. There will still be, nominally, federal control, centralized in him. Other than that, every local and state FBI branch will act as, effectively, a terror cell - they work their own leads, make their own arrests on their own recognizance, and generally conduct business as they see fit. This makes for an incredibly dangerous form of secret police - they have no leaders above the local level, no real command and control, and they're all tasked with only one thing: make less crime.

Imagine the Cheka, but they're organized like al-Qaeda.

  • If you ever say the words, "we should separate kids from their families as a deterrent", you should be immediately shunned from society. Your job should fire you. Your colleagues, your family, your friends should all pretend like you do not exist. The entire community where you live should write you out of their lives.

It worked WONDERS for early modern societies.

  • Which I'm surprised no cities have challenged this as a sovereignty issue.

Well, not that surprised, but if you're a city government and figure out that a state government can just completely nullify your labor protections...well, it raises questions of just how much actual legal power you have.

I know that legal power and legal challenges mean absolutely nothing now, considering everything, but still, I'm surprised that the Florida SC hasn't been hit with questions of "hey I thought we had a right to self-organize".

  • Arguably, our whole approach to small housing spaces needs to be looked at. Unlike in the UK and a lot of other European countries, you can't lease or buy out your apartment, which really leaves you at the mercy of your landlord or your property company when they sell out or decide to throw you out for someone who can pay more.

  • Publicly televised military massacre. Trump is doing Saddam shit, and I wouldn't put it past him to simply try to order the military to either start a shooting war with a near peer during said parade, or order them to gun down Congress/the SC.

  • Yeah, this is pretty much it. There's a TON of students who already left, probably closed out everything on this side of the border for them as well - apartment leases, class enrollments, etc. They aren't coming back just because ICE said "we promise it won't happen again", and now all the dumb idiots who weren't paying attention can now point at a soundbite and say "well ICE reversed those because they did them wrong/weren't supposed to, so it's fine". Combine this with the woman who was literally black-bagged off her college campus in full daylight and full view of surveillance cameras by ICE, and I sure as hell wouldn't wanna come back just because the government pinky-swears it won't happen again.

  • I was about to say, they tried. They have been trying for three years. They've committed a TON more forces than Ukraine, and still haven't made significant progress. The invasion is a military failure on pretty much every level, and it's only the most delusional that think Russia still has any chance of actually pulling off a successful annexation or occupation for any significant length of time.

  • Yeah, the thing a lot of Catholics in America don't wanna look at is the fact that we very well might see another schism between American Catholicism and Roman Catholicism within our lifetimes, possibly within a decade. The American church has been drifting REALLY far from the RCC, and not in the good ways.

  • Recommend growing what you know is safe. The amount of "could kill you" mushrooms in the US is fairly low IIRC, but the amount of "this looks almost identical to an edible species but will make your day/week Not Fun" species is high enough in most places that I wouldn't chance my luck on foraging.

  • Yeah, they chose El Salvador because they've literally abolished due process. It's like Cambodia again - someone accuses you and you're just instantly taken away. You MIGHT get to see a judge after you're imprisoned for a month or two, likely after you've been beaten half to death so you'll confess to anything just to make the pain stop. It's a dressed up version of Duterte's Philippines - we'll kidnap you and let you die, rather than just some death squad rolling up to your door (because that doesn't play well to the media and the other can be dressed up as "law and order").
