  • Well, those are two very different things. One is essentially for politicians and basically amounts to “just get Congress to do better” (a whole lot easier said than done) and one is an act that essentially has to be championed by a person or organization and then implemented by a masse of people. Greta has called for boycotts before, so under this definition she’s good under your boat.

I’ve read other comments of yours, and many of them are reasonable (more reasonable than the average user at least) and not worthy of downvotes. But your solutions seem to be missing a few steps between “be where we are now” and “just get everyone to drive a hybrid”.

  • Not just in Lemmy, but I think there’s an increasing divide between the demographic I’m going to call “has only ever lived in a major city” and “everyone else”, especially online.

A shocking amount of people (to me) have never once in their life lived in an area with less than like 500,000 people. To many of these people, it is incomprehensible to imagine that a lot of people have legitimate needs for cars. They have good intentions, and many of them are otherwise smart people, but they really struggle to imagine how and where many Americans live, and what all goes into things like the transportation of goods and services.

Public transportation is great! But without what would be the largest investment in infrastructure in human history by several magnitudes there’s simply no way to just get rid of 90% of car ownership or whatever.

  • Just as a fun fact, it’s actually quite common for industrial machinery and the like to be controlled with a gaming controller. Like, a hundred things wrong with the submarine trip - but the PlayStation controller is genuinely one of the more legitimate aspects.

They’re simply made well, easy to use, and typically extremely durable and long lasting.

  • Yeah, it’s pretty clear that this increase in wage will bump up the end cost of ordering at these restaurants but like… it’s by such a small margin where anyone complaining about it is a massive dork.

Big Mac is 30 cents more expensive so staff can get paid (closer to) a living wage. That’s a very fair trade off for the American people

  • Yep. Trades, nursing (and related fields, lab-related medical jobs), hell, even skilled manufacturers are great paths to go into. They’re not glitzy, and you still have to like… do work. But that’s just part of living in society. Someone’s gotta clean the toilets, someone’s gotta fix the power lines.

  • Which trades are you referring to?

I live close by to a community college that allows basically anyone to fairly quickly (1-2 yrs) get into a trade. I know several people who did. It’s not “easy” in the sense that yeah, you’re still learning a whole fucking skillset and trying to land your first adult job, but it’s definitely… extremely doable…?

  • Rich parents.

There’s really no other answer for this one. I went to a very nice university. The average person has no idea how many college students are coming from phenomenally high income families where price is essentially no issue.

It’s just a matter of how high up the top 10% is relative to everyone else. Both your parents are doctors and they have 18 years to save up - half a mill for Amy’s college bill is basically piss money.

The only problem is that these college students tend to grow up in areas where this is basically the norm. I had so many 19 year olds act flabbergasted that not only are neither of my parents doctors/lawyers/engineers… they didn’t even gasp go to college!

  • Wooooo yes more performative partisan bullshit! That’s what all the people want! More performative bullshit! More insults! Let’s take some money out of Medicare and fund a big gold statue of Biden taking a dump on Trumps chest!!!

  • Cops, judges, and the rest of the criminal justice system kill thousands of people every year - be it directly or indirectly.

I really don’t think a lot of people understand just how many Americans every single year are impacted not just directly through things like police brutality - but egregious prison sentences and fines for either minor crimes or crimes they didn’t even commit.

For every news story you get about some poor guy who was exonerated after a false conviction, there are a lot more who were falsely convicted and never got vindication - and even more who have to pay tickets or face jail times over made up misdemeanors.

  • Perplexing, but nice to see!

It’s a really great and faithful remake - but I feel like I heard so little about it that I’m so confused to see new endings and player characters come out for it now months later.

Hoping it has some second wind with the general gaming crowd. Seems like it got overshadowed by RE4 and the latest Zelda game and never hit it off with that kind of TikTok, game of the month crowd

  • No, we’re of the same mindset. It’s clear the missiles didn’t fall on these vehicles by chance, it’s just up for some debate regarding on if they were deliberately targeted knowing they were aid vehicles or not

  • Yeah, it’s advertising. They want to be able to sell you clothes you’ll probably actually wear, video games you’ll actually play, etc. They probably don’t care about your google spell checks as much as they care about what posts you’re liking on your Instagram reels.

On one hand, it sucks to not really have that privacy. On the other hand, people act like if you don’t use a VPN for every single online service today that in 5 years data brokers will sell your exact address to the Islamic Jihad for ten dollars.

  • I think he actually got a little worried about the pushback regarding the most recent bombing of aid vans. Like, even the most pro Israeli outlets and groups online were saying “wow… that was a huge fuck up..”

Of course, none of them were acknowledging it was likely intentional. But I think in terms of gauging “are the Israeli people cool with us literally starving civilians to death” IDF leadership got a fairly affirmative “no”.

  • It’s interesting that DF has been around for just year and years and whenever I think it’s fully faded out some YouTuber makes a video about it and back it goes.

It’s like a cycle. People play dwarf fortress, people make a video on it. Then they forget. And then a new, young audience is around and another video comes out about Dwarf fortress and they watch it and get into it.
