  • I have to agree, the film is MUCH better than it looks, with one exception early on (see below) the rest of the film works well.

  • Speculation, I'm guessing a villain since that's the classic one and done role. I'm going with Moses Magnum since it gives him technology to play with and seismic powers, which are used to either piss off or trick Namor.

  • A clip from 1992 isn't new. If you've got new details, spill 'em. Right now he's just saying what everyone else had been saying for years.

  • I mean I want more Foggy, so from that perspective it would have been a great idea.

However I can definitely see how a slight variant character is difficult to follow. Even Loki, the show all about variants, struggled with this. The Loki we follow in the show forks after The Avengers film. The Loki the audience knows died in Infinity War. The solution was to show post-Avengers Loki a highlight reel of his life and just make him Infinity War Loki.

Plus based on the direction we're heading, I think they made the right choice.

  • Think of it like web browsers.

You can visit websites using Firefox, or you can visit websites using Chrome. Websites all speak the same language, so both Firefox & Chrome can load them.

In the case of Lemmy & PieFed, they also speak the same language, in this case that language (or protocol) is called ActivityPub.

So if you use a Lemmy app, it can talk to the different Lemmy servers, but it can also talk to different PieFed servers. Similarly if you use a PieFed app, it can talk to the different PieFed servers, but it can also talk to Lemmy servers.

Now Lemmy & PieFed are not the exact same. In the same way British English and American English are not the exact same. So your Lemmy app might not let you login to a PieFed instance directly. But they are similar, so maybe one day.

Since you are a lemm.ee user, your instance is going away, so you'll need to pick a new instance. You can pick a Lemmy instance or a PieFed instance, but the one you pick may limit the apps your able to use. Both also have websites/web apps, so if you're happy with the web version, you can use that too.

I'll also add that PieFed has some features that Lemmy doesn't have. So if you pick PieFed you may get some new features. The downside may be that you can't use your favorite app anymore.

I suggest trying both, but it you're not sure or ready, you can just pick another Lemmy server. You can always try PieFed at a later date.

  • Different than the voice actress in Far From Home.

Interestingly the implication seems to be played by and not just voiced by.

I'm guessing we'll see (White) Vision connect up to either the Internet or an isolated Stark network and the show, at least in part, will take place on a virtual Internet, kinda like in Futurama. That will also allow White Vision to take on the appearance of "normal" Vision, since that's who he is/grows to believe he is.

I forget which film (Endgame?) but Banner mentions that Vision is made up of everyone who helped create him. James Spader is returning, so that's Ultron. EDITH will be Stark. But that makes think we'll get something to represent Banner as well.

  • and its leadership barred from working in tech (or politics)

  • The film was heavily marketed as well, so I wouldn't be surprised if it's on the higher end.

  • That's a fair point, although T'Challa gets to see Iron Man, Cal & Bucky fight, which I think is a powerful "Oh shit" moment.

I think instead of Shuri & Namor fighting solo they should have been part of the main battle. Then Shuri could have at least seen the war/destruction around her and that could have been the catalyst.

  • Looking at Riri Williams, it's weird, you could probably cut her from the film and not a lot would change.

You'd need to find a different reason to introduce Namor, but after that Riri just kinda hangs out.

She goes with Shuri to Talokan, but she's unconscious when she is taken there and just sits around until they leave.

She makes a cool suit for herself. She might have helped with the Midnight Angel armor, but it's clear Shuri did the bulk of the design. In either case, while cool, none of the armor created is key to the end battle.

Obviously Shuri is smart, so having her struggle and then Riri just show up and solve things would be cheap. Maybe they could have leaned more into Shuri being angry and that causing her to mess up or be less receptive to feedback.

Riri was also the only one able to build a vibranium detector. Maybe find a reason for her to swear she'll never build one again, stay behind but still have Shuri taken to Talokan, and then Riri builds another one. That both justifies Namor's distrust and Riri's importance.

  • I think it's also fun for flying characters to have a reason for flying. It gives you something to point to or a weakness to try and attack.

Ironman/War Machine/Ironheart fly because of their mech suit.

Ultron/Vision are robots based on the above.

    Doctor Strange has his cape.

    Mordo has his boots.

    Thor has his hammer.

Ebony Maw clearly has psychic powers.

Captain Marvel is the only one who is flying "just because" . (Yes, it's infinity stone power, but she can't lose it and it just is.)

  • Her speech to Okoye is so powerful.

Okoye just wants to help but she points out the betrayal from the first film and how she ignored her advice causing Shuri to be captured. She's 100% right but it hurts so much, both of them.

  • I just finished my rewatch and I think I agree with you, except for the ending battle. That's the part that feels rushed.

When Killmonger takes over he rules with an iron fist, he goes too far by destroying the herb, and Wakanda isn't saved until T'Challa returns.

When Shuri takes over she similarly goes right into revenge mode, but then she sorta just saves herself and resolves everything.

I would have liked to see Shuri take things a little too far. I would have liked to see her really channel Killmonger. I know she burns Namor but that's not quite enough.

In the same way that T'Challa was an outside force, someone needed to be her outside force. I think M'Baku would be best, especially as he ends up becoming king.

  • Pretty much. It was decided that tablets should be little laptops and not big phones. Phones got bigger, so tablets had to get bigger, plus because they were "laptops" they had to get bigger to support larger and larger keyboards. It's really annoying.

My phone used to be 4.7 inches, now it's 6.7 inches. So my 7 inch tablet, long since dead, doesn't make sense. So now my tablet is 10 inches and honestly it's too big to be comfortable as a tablet.

  • Except those affected by hurricane season.

Help isn't coming so I hope it's a mild year, but hope is a terrible strategy.

  • before midterms

We're not going to wait that long. DOGE cuts are already affecting people and this summer is going to hit some people HARD.

Some of the cuts will be reversed, at great expense, and next summer will hopefully be better. Then Trump will take credit for partially fixing the problem he created and declared victory.

    Hopefully people aren't idiots but...

  • Zootopia? Based on what I've seen online, who's getting milked? Anything that moves.

  • Santa Clarita Diet. It's not too late (6 years ago) and they could still bring it back for a finale run of episodes or film.

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. It's too late (16 years ago) but the show had just started to figure itself out and setup a HUGE cliffhanger that sadly goes nowhere.

  • explicitly had required reading

I think Multiverse of Madness had more required reading. Wanda wants to save her kids and without WandaVision you're forced to ask, "What kids?"

For this film I think Kamala being "a big fan" is enough. We don't need to know how she got her powers for her to fit into this film.

For Monica it's a little more required, but they basically just speedrun and say "A magical witch gave me powers" and while that's an understatement you can just sort of accept that she has powers now.

It's similar to Kamala where we just accept that these two new main characters have powers, and that's ok since this is their big screen debut.

  • The Marvels immediately fell victim to false narratives and culture war nonsense

People with shitty opinions have shitty opinions. Surprise!

I'm not saying you have ignore the elephant in the room when covering the film but you don't need to keep bringing it up as though the people with shitty takes have valid criticism. They're not arguing in good faith.

Now, did the The Marvels have issues as a film? Yes.

The two biggest, barely mentioned in this article, were the shortened run time which led to a rushed storyline and the weak character development of the films primary villain.

The film skips the more interesting story of how Captain Marvel became viewed not as the savior of all worlds, but as the villain of the Kree.

We also have the resentment of Monica towards Captain Marvel. I think the film generally handled this well, but it was weird that these characters never spoke before the film. It would have been nice if they had an attempted but more strained relationship as this film starts.

And if course to contrast all this Kamala absolutely adores Captain Marvel. The "why" isn't really explained. Captain Marvel is mostly out in space, so what did she do to gain her appreciation? Even if we say that she saved the day in Endgame, Kamala would only have second had accounts of these events.

The film needed a bit more world building. It needed more time to tell it's story. Instead we got an extended cat montage. While memorable (ha) and funny, it doesn't add to the story.

But do I hate The Marvels? No. It's a disappointment. It should have been better.
