  • I don't like Apple. That'll probably show. But I like Microsoft and Google even less, so ultimately I do want them to continue to succeed for the time being.

They should sell cheaper x86 and arm laptops. If other manufacturers can sell decent midrange laptops for around $500 USD, so can Apple. They can even charge a bit extra for that Apple logo and still come in well under the $1000 minimum price tag now.

Though that in and of itself might be shooting themselves in the foot a bit. They have kind of a designer brand vibe, people might not trust reasonably priced hardware from them. So they'd probably want to adjust their marketing too.

I think they should do this, because declining sales tells us less people are willing to pay that premium. Though they should keep their current product line too. I like what they're doing with their Mx ARM chips.

  • a not-insignificant number of users will simply abandon YouTube if this keeps up.

I regetfully disagree. I think very few people will leave the platform and that the additional revenue generated from those that use adblockers but allow YouTube ads will easily cover the difference of those that do.

I don't say this to discourage boycotting. Fuck google, do it if you want to!

  • A VM might be a solution for you? I have a single Windows program that I need for work. I chose a VM rather than futzing with wine because it's a solution I know will work. I just run the VM for that during work and shut it down at the end of the workday.

  • I know it's common for the holidays to feel stressful. But it shouldn't. Nevermind religious connotations, it's meant to be a festive time culturally. Let it be that! And it sounds like you're trying to be on that track.

  • It's like that "This is fine." dog in a burning house meme. Except the house is our planet. And it's literal instead of a metaphor.

Stay safe, stay cool! From your colonial friends north of the equator.

  • It's such a sad state of affairs. I've heard the term culture war applied to our political parties and that feels accurate.

Hearing that it's causing someone to fear for the safety of their loved ones is distressing. Though, sadly, not surprising.

Hoping for the best for you and yours, despite our trajectory.

  • I would think long and hard about spending years in a foreign country. While admittedly I haven't done so myself, I've traveled to some of the kinds of countries you're thinking of and talked to and observed expats in those places and it seems awfully lonely. There's a cultural and, I assume, language barriers that'll make you feel like an outsider. You may find a community of others like yourself, but still you're likely to struggle to make meaningful relationships. Sure, working for the man sucks. But I'd argue crushing loneliness might be worse.

Of course I'm applying my wants/needs and my experiences to your situation. Maybe that's not a concern for you. Maybe it'll be the best thing you ever did. But it warrants consideration. The grass isn't always greener on the other side.

Also something to be mindful of is in some countries foreign individuals can't own land.

  • This is what I came to express as well. Unless the software is open source, both client and server, what they say is unverifiable and it's safest to assume it's false. Moreover, the owning company has a verifiable and well known history of explicitly acting against user privacy. There is no reason to trust them and every reason not to.

  • I came here to disagree with you, but in thinking a little about it, I'm not sure I do.

I find the lack of ports and upgradability extremely problematic. And while I understand they're supposed to be light, slim, quality laptops, the price point feels high even so.

But, these are personal gripes with the device. And nothing to do with Linux. But these are basically the same things Apple aims for and people seem to love that.

So, I might argue the price doesn't make it reasonable for the average user. But otherwise the more devices with Linux pre-installed, the better.

  • Snap packages are files that contain a file system and get mounted. They contain the application and libraries and such it depends on.

It doesn't sound like such a bad idea on paper, and speaking for myself and from what I've gathered from stuff I see in the community, a general bias against Canonical probably plays a part.

But specifically as a desktop package solution, I do think it's a poor one. It's messy, slow, bloated and sandboxing creates usability issues (though it has benefits too, of course).

  • This one is tough for me. I'm opposed to any distro being considered the "standard". It feels so antithetical to what makes Linux great.

But it's also probably what we need for better user adoption. I don't know which I'd pick if I had to, but I know it wouldn't be Ubuntu.

  • I use syncthing + Joplin for this. I haven't looked into exporting data but I'd be surprised if it couldn't. Otherwise it checks your boxes. Joplin also supports encryption, which wasn't on your list but is a great feature.

Joplin supports a handful of sync methods but using a file based sync with syncthing is nice because it's less effort and maintenance to run than self hosting nextcloud, for example. And since it's purpose is to sync as opposed to remote access, you still have access to a copy your data even if you can't reach any of your syncthing nodes for whatever reason. Though to be fair you can do that with nextcloud as well.
