  • So you're brand new to Linux and you're already hacking away at something you don't understand well. Good for you! That's how you learn 😊.

That being said, getting (as you're learning) and keeping software running in wine can be frustrating. I'd suggest using an open source alternative if possible. Hopefully the one others recommended is a good fit for you. And a bonus, one less piece of proprietary software you rely on, which imo is always a good feeling.

Good luck, and welcome to Linux!

  • This has been my experience as well with duckduckgo. I want to like it, and I do have it as my default search but I often end up searching Google after unsatisfactory results from duckduckgo.

    Thanks for asking this question!

  • Update: The survey provides this answer.

What's wrong with sh.itjust.works? Good faith question, genuinely curious. I don't know much about the instance and in taking a quick peek, I see a lot of poking the hexbear but nothing else immediately sticks out.

Lemmygrad and hexbear I'm familiar with why they're problematic.

  • I came across Linux sometime in the late 90's. It was free (as in pricetag, which is all I cared about at the time) and different so I was curious. The PC I was using wasn't mine so repartitioning wasn't an option but I found some ready to go boot from dos linux distro and gave it a go. And I loved it! And still do.

  • I have this opinion of PHP. I don't use it, and I look for alternatives when I find something that does what I want that's written in it.

Your callout is fair though. I'm not going to switch or anything. I'm happy with my favored scripting language. But I'll try to not be dismissive of projects that are written in PHP.

  • I don't want to agree with this comment. And in fact I would say most of the time I don't. Most stuff "just works" nowadays. But I do occasionally have to fight with something I wouldn't in Windows. Easily worth it IMO but that's not going to be everyone's take.

  • Yeah, I can't argue that. Lots of hate in the world, and so much of it from people just like you describe.

Maybe this person is different. Maybe not. Worst case, my approach changes nothing. But, maybe it will.

  • I looked up your comment history and saw the comment in question.

Changes in the anconym may not be meaningful to you. I don't keep up on it either, to be honest. But to the people it does include, it's very meaningful. I think this is one of those "put yourself in their shoes" type things. You shouldn't be dismissive.

I don't condone hateful replies towards you either. It doesn't help anything.

  • I do think you have to pick your battles when interacting digitally with people in your life, and I agree that you shouldn't force anyone in to a solution they don't want to use. But were I OP, I'd pick this battle. Refuse to use it, tell them they can leave you notes on the fridge.

  • I feel like we can ignore this and it'll mostly be a non-issue. Hopefully I don't have to eat those words later.

YouTube can detect common current adblocking methods, and use this to hinder you now, prompting to comply with them. If you do, they win. You pay for no ads or you have an exception in your adblocker.

As another comment mentioned, it's a cat and mouse game. Adblockers will get ahead of it. So just wait it out.

  • I used to host my own nextcloud instance. It takes a bit of effort to setup and requires some maintenance. As far as self hosting goes I would grade it as easy to do. So if you like a Dropbox style option and want to try it out, you should.

But honestly I'm here to steer you towards syncthing if you go the file sync + libreoffice (or whatever) path. Once I found out about it I switched, and am happy I did.

  • I think this is a valuable point.

I saw the headline and thought "and nothing of value was lost". But reading this was a privilege check. I've never needed Twitter or anything else to help resist because my way of life isn't really being challenged.

I think it's a lesson as you point out. Don't trust corporations. And I would add don't trust centralized platforms either. But decentralization is a two edged sword. You're protected from a single entity's agenda, but the dispersed nature of a decentralized platform will make it more difficult to come together for a cause.

    Edit: spelling

  • Yes, instances can do whatever they want and users should seek instances that match their needs but:

    • Per the thread OP linked, it's suggested this could be temporary. "this is also not a permanent judgement" is my context in saying as such.
    • The post did not feel demanding. Though perhaps you're making a more general reference?

    Edit: context

Edit2: Not intended as advocation for refederating. I'm content with the content available to me so I don't have a strong opinion.

  • Get someone qualified to manage it.

Figure out how much I would need to live the rest of my life comfortably without having to work on anything I didn't want to.

Invest the rest in helping others that want to do good.
