  • It's an interesting one, a lot of people really do seem to be arguing cars shouldn't exist which is absolutely insane, likewise there are people who have the equally hairbrained idea that cars are the only option for any journey.

There is no doubt at all that fleet managed self-driving electric cars are at some point going to be a vital part of all transport networks, the efficiency and utility is far higher than any other potential option. Lithium batteries can be recycled endlessly and the construction process can be powered from renewables so long term we're going to get to a point where the ecological impact is negligible.

Of course we should be using other options where appropriate but we don't have a magic wand so we need the utility of small personal transport, if we're going to start switching off oil production systems then we're going to need those vehicles to run on electric - the more we shift to electric the better the support and industrial infrastructure gets and the more refined the technology becomes.

  • Yeah I do agree tbh, people find a weird bit of right wing craziness poking through the wall and panic but the reality is you can find popular republican's with crazy hateful ideas all through time and in every direction.

  • Yeah I once read a book describing the soon coming end of the world from every century going beck to PraiseGod Barebones the English politician who prophesised the coming end of the world in 1675, they all said the same thing 'mankinds huberis and sudden turn to immorality has doomed us all'

  • Yeah absolutely, and the problem is they'll always find an excuse - someone on here recently argued to me that since we punch Nazis we should also punch people who use words like 'unalive' because it's an attack on our culture - he was being entirely serious too.

You can see people rubbing their hands in glee at every climate change story too and it's scary, I've been involved with a lot of green groups and eco-positive movements which are full of wonderful people who really care about making a better world - then there are overly online lunatics who never lifted a finger to help native species or anything like that but have decided it's a wonderful excuse to live out their most destructive and hateful fantasies.

Religion is a way of harnessing that awful impulse in people and using it for the benefit of a small theocratic aristocracy, it's a way of saying 'you can get away with being the awfull person you want to be if you do it in the name of our gang and to our enemies'

  • Your statement is 'i don't know what I'm talking about but I have strong options' that's understandable but if we really care about harm reduction then it has to be an evidence based and science backed policy.

I have no idea what the right thing to do is but I want whatever helps mitigate risk and harm.

  • Not even drunk, the back of your neighbours house catches fire so you run over and bang on the door to wake him - he doesn't answer so you kick the door open just as he gets halfway down the stairs -- even if he's a responsible gun owner that moment of someone bursting in while he has a gun in his hand, instant tragedy...

  • Shall we at least admit that it's ability to make utilitarian images for use by people making creative commons content like Indy games, YouTube videos, instruction courses, online education tools and similar which we all benefit from is a great thing and worth celebrating.

  • There are so many crazy possibilities that will probably never happen, I love imagining what the world would be like if we could look through a time window - my daydream is normally about sending probes back to the point in space earth used to be and how fascinating the debates about where to look first would be, knowing it's going to take years to get there and record it with everyone debating and getting anxious as to what it'll see.

Like imagine how much information you'd get from fifteen minutes 4k footage of a Roman senate debate, and how disappointing it'd be after all that anticipation if you get a day or was closed. Still a billion things to obsess over in the image but disappointing when you're hoping to see ceaser speak

Of course trying to catch sight of Jesus would be a huge project, I imagine it like those grifts where people go looking for the arc. What do they do if there's no sign? What do they do if when they look nothing is anything like expected - would be so many people trying to find clues to what actually happened, at some point someone is going to find something really wild like they finally find someone from the Bible but it's Jesus mate Judas laughing about how rich they're getting pulling the reward money and rescue scam from the good the bad and the ugly...

And the people scouring to get clips for their YouTube channel, histories biggest cringe moments, wildest parties in history, luckiest trick shots ever...

  • They build roads going every direction because people and stuff needs to go every direction, people still need to go to those places if you replace them with trains.

Also the effort to fix and replace train lines is far more than fixing roads, I think a lot of Americans haven't really used trains much so they don't comprehend how complex it is, when you've had trains cancelled for a thousand dumb reasons like the wrong kind of leaves on the track then trains don't feel as reliable - and when the track is blocked for repair they can't go round so it's bus replacement service so if you scrap roads then you need redundancy so you end up with masses of tracks everywhere.

I love trains but people need to learn how they actually work and the costs involved so we can be reasonable in planning and build the most useful solution for each situation - just saying trains for everything doesn't make sense.

  • Yeah I want a cheaper zero with less power use, very few of my projects come close to using all the zeros resources so if they could do similar spec cheaper and modernized it would be amazing.

Maybe chuck on an ADC, power management for batteries, better usb power supply...
