So being successful when everyone is trying to kill you makes them bad but rich countries like Iran failing repeatedly to complete the genocides they fund makes them loveable roagues who can do no wrong?
You'll excuse me if I don't subscribe to your philosophy of life.
I really don't think they want actual science or logic, this is the five minute hate for the day.
I think it really boils down to capitalism being really bad at things like this, look at the UKs high-speed rail project - hugely over budget and behind schedule AND not getting any of the important bits that actually make it usable. There's no way we could do anything actually cool like a passenger vacuum tube.
I was actually a little excited by some of the stuff musk was saying back in the boring company days because it briefly sounded like he was investing money in technologies that would be huge, narrow bore vaccum tunnels especially... Sadly I think he didn't really understand the science fiction he was reading, or rather he didn't get the importance of intermediary steps. Or he remembered me owns a car company.
What would make a huge difference in reducing vehicles on the road is rapid hands free cargo delivery through automated vacuum tunnels - but he wanted to skip micro tunnels and instead just go to ever so slightly smaller tunnels which is basically pointless. We needed a totally new boring technology not a slightly shrunk one, it should be doing city infrastructure and micro cargo transit then when we've perfected the mechanisms we can scale up into passenger sized networks to complement the developing passenger rail system (which rapid micro transit would really help as the need for cargo transit is the main reason that stops the subway being feasible for certain people)
Ok I can agree on principle but in practice you unfortunately need to have alternative systems in place first to deal with the realities of the problem.
Take the guy I used to work with who went to prison for scamming old ladies out of money, if we don't have mechanisms to deal with people like him then it won't take long before everyone is demanding we bring back prisons
Yeah the UK police do a test that can tell if the THC in your blood is still active, it still over measures a bit but can tell the difference between someone smoking a bit the night before and having had one before work in the morning or in the lunch break.
You really don't know what you're talking about though, this is an often repeated talking point which comes from pretty much nothing, do you have any evidence for it or did you half read a headline in a meme post without realising the argument being made is 'by allowing aid into Gaza it's proping up Hamas' because that's where that 'funding Hamas' line actually comes from.
Israel don't let enough aid through and they're the bad guys, they let aid through and they're the bad guys - they don't have a cease fire and they're the bad guys, or they have a cease fire and fail to totally remove Hamas so again they're the bad guys...
Iran funds Hamas and sturs up trouble as a way of maintaining support at home and due to their fanatical religious ideals -that bit isn't even sightly complicated, you don't need conspiracy theories
Does that involve all Jewish people leaving Israel or are you talking about the two state solution which Israel has repeatedly tried to work towards and both the plo and now Hamas reject on principle?
This is silly, not mentioning Iran as the actual people training and funding Hamas is either very deceptive or evidence you have no idea about anything happening in the middle East.
Also acting like Hamas are the only terrorist organisation in the middle East and a total novelty is absolutely absurd, when people call them freedom fighters without any reference to what they're actually saying they're fighting for is again totally deceptive or from a total lack of understanding - they don't want freedom they want a theocratic dictatorship and death to all non Muslims.
That's not too say everything Israel have done of good or moral but painting Hamas as innocent people just fighting for their freedom is laughable
For the pi there's always the option of getting a Bluetooth remote and writing your own script to send the commands when they're triggered - it's easier than you think because chatgpt can do all the awkward stuff for you
This is great news for niche porn sites and unregulated communities, and especially for sexual predators who used to have such a difficult time luring impressionable teens onto their creepy discord porn sharing communities because it was so easy to assess regular porn but now teens will have to learn how to navigate the tangled web of obscure fetish communities just to see a boob...
Though if they handle it sensibly it does make sense to ensure they have robust systems in place to remove illegal content including revenge porn and leaked nudes.
People want the government to provide services efficiently yet the second anyone suggests not doing things the most expensive and outdated way possible everyone loses their minds.
Are you all accelerationists or just the no give only throw dog?
So you're saying that governments should waste tax payer money on something that has no real benefit just because it can?
I guess you also want to keep them longer than 150 years?;I mean it would be crack head behaviour to throw them out right? Why not convert the whole country to warehouses and store every document ever made?
They're just old legal documents, interesting to have a copy for future generations but in no way worth the huge waste of money storing them would be.
It's not like we don't also store the file details of the storage mechanism, we're not going to forget how to decode the exact version of pdf used to store them in a world where we're able to safely store thousands of tons of pointless old legal documents.
And the cost of converting all these old legal documents onto low acid paper and storing them is going to be huge, I really don't think anyone actually wants to do that.
Yeah Reddit always had that problem, I think it's here too - top rated comment is someone saying it won't work and the article is wrong, everyone just accepts it without question.
I still see people using battery breakthrough stories as an example of stuff that never comes too market despite most of them being in the very phone the person is using.
I genuinely think a lot of them are just people who hate science and engineering so don't want people to be interested in it
I think it's interesting how mathematically hard it is to judge anyone else's intelligence, like you talk about the issue of people rolling down the hill and I get that and agree but really it's vastly more complex topography - if the conversation is about python programming I can look very intelligent, if it's about java programming then I'll look a bit of a fool, and these are as similar as you can get were the topic famous geologists then I'd probably seem like a total idiot
Now you'll be tempted to say but you can still tell by how you carry yourself and it's s bit true but that's not really true either, I've travelled enough to know that common sense in one area is dumb somewhere else - ask too many questions in one place they'll think you're simple and don't ask enough somewhere else they'll think it too.
Part of it is that we don't really know what level someone is on, if you see a guy in the garden staring at the pretty leaves for hours he just might be empty headed, or he could be Alan Turing working out one of the most fundamentally brilliant mathematics discoveres of the era.
We're on our own hill of intelligence so it can be hard to tell if someone on a different one is smart or dumb
I get that you, like me, don't like capitalist companies but what you're saying is based on nothing.
They can't steal content from here that's literally not possible, this comment here I'm writing now can not be stolen by anyone ever - and not just in the piracy isn't stealing way but in the it's public domain so you already all own it too.
I use stuff from meta all the time and I didn't steal it, all the vital open source code they've created and which is a fundermental part of stable diffusion and other open source tools is benefiting the community - are they only doing this to kill something?
I understand the logic that successful capitalist company must be evil because that's how capitalism works but it's also a lot more complex, open source isn't just a wishywashy dream for cheapskate nerds like meit's a powerful and positive force that can benefit everyone even companies like meta without them needing to kill anyone or anything. Participation isn't just it's own moral reward it's actually got a lot of other benefits too.
Meta might just want to federate because open source is good.
Yes but being able to technically do something despite it negatively affecting the wider community doesn't magically mean people shouldn't express their opinions, and of you're not saying people shouldn't then your post is entirely pointless
It really is terrible for building a community here, I've been trying to decide the best place to even start and it's so difficult to know where when most people won't be able to find it even if they are federated because the discovery system is so weak then there's the possibility of it not lasting or either defederating or been defederated from...
I think it's also especially bad for creating insular groupthink communities which are totally closed to other opinions, seriously look at the moderation logs sometime, the mods are really pushing their bias heavily in a lot of places and it's pushing away anyone that doesn't conform.
I hope better systems emerge that allow this to be what it was intended but honestly at the moment it just feels like it's getting more closed.
So being successful when everyone is trying to kill you makes them bad but rich countries like Iran failing repeatedly to complete the genocides they fund makes them loveable roagues who can do no wrong?
