I don't think it actually did anything to stop meth production either. It just shifted more business to the cartels.

I keep both the 4 hour and the 12 hour time-released versions at home. There's no substitute. I'll gladly spend a few extra minutes at the pharmacy counter to obtain it.

I don't know what's going through these ancient politicians' heads but don't they reach a point where they've accomplished everything in life they can and they just want to relax? Being an 80+ year old senator and dying in office sounds horrible to me.
