I agree and the market is not offering an affordable, equally capable alternative to combustion engines. EVs are a larp for anyone who needs to do more than just commute to and from work. (e.g. long distance travel, towing, hauling)

I know how VPNs work. When I connect to a VPN I trust that the provider doesn't snoop on me, actually routes the traffic like they promise and combines my traffic effectively enough that it obfuscates my identity.

My main point is that you are expecting the impossible if you think a company with more cash on hand than the federal government is ever going to do anything but manipulate you. If anything this drama is either for show or an effort by the government to make Apple do even more of their bidding. You will never get fair and balanced reporting or non-manipulative "entertainment" from these fortune 500s. It's a lost cause. Find independent sources and look to them with skepticism because short of seeing it with your own eyes that's as close to the truth as you will get.

If your VPN isn't routing to your home network so you can safely access selfhosted applications then you're basically just sharing your traffic with a total stranger and trusting them not to run telemetry etc.

Self-hosting was always the intent. Open source ended up being a bonus. People 30 years ago wouldn't understand why something like facebook would even need to exist. The internet is designed so literally everyone can have their own website.
