  • The cost of everything is artificially inflated by about 3% due to the merchant fees on said credit cards.

We're all being played. If you have a cash back or rewards credit card, you're just being played less. It's a huge scam that were stuck using.

  • No,

If there is a legit schism in the Republican party a new party will be created. Either the new party or the current Republican party will die.

It's unlikely that 3 parties can exist with the campaign financing and ballot access laws that were designed to hamstring all minor parties.

Neither of the post schism parties would ever compete with the Democrats on elected numbers. A schism would be a huge gift to the Democrats.

  • Automation moves our society forward.

It's been happening since the industrial revolution.

When electricity was becoming widespread people feared for the lamp lighters. When the automobile was invented people feared for the farriers.

Jobs will be created in new spaces. That is how it has worked in the past. This is at a level that we younger folk haven't seen. It can be scary to some. I also won't deny this will happen at a faster pace than most other changes.

The genie is out of the bottle.

Your likely know everything I've said up to this point. Here's where we differ.

Most businesses in developed countries revolve around selling things to the middle class. Those businesses that don't directly, usually play a role to that end. Without a middle class to sell things to very few businesses will exist. If you don't believe me, browse the fortune 500 list. The Fords, GEs, Home Depots all depends on a middle class.

Philosophically, if the middle class ceases to exist were fucked. If it gets to a point where ford is failing (again) those people with political influence will be asking for ubi. We don't need to stress over this. I have no political influence. I can't call in favors with senators. Over half the country is opposed to ubi. Let it play out a little. See what happens. We'll get through this.

  • how do you prioritize your home projects when under budget constraints and they are of equal importance or unimportance?

I'm a fan of lists for this type of thing. Include how many hours of work and cost today and the costs and time if you skip it for a couple years. As in peeling exterior paint is cheap today, but if not addressed, you're replacing boards for much more time and cost.

how do you deal with the overwhelm/frustrations of previous owner issues or poor workmanship?

They were trying their best to keep it in decent shape. Just as you will do the same.

their pets urinated in every room with carpet

There is a product called "Nature's Miracle". It has an enzyme that removes urine smell from carpet. It's sold at pet stores or online. Get the gallon size to start.

  • My search results keep wanting me to go to Reddit. I'm trying to avoid it, but it keeps calling.

I'm not scrolling there like I did before the "Spez killed the 3rd party app migration". I miss the level of engagement and ease of finding communities. Lemmy is decent, but the post volume is lacking. If I scroll new now, and again 12 hours later, there's not much new stuff before I see the stuff from last time.

  • 100%. We as a society create laws. There is no point in making these laws if there is no one to enforce them. Further more, most Americans want police to show up when they dial 911. Defunding the police isn't going to happen.

What can happen, mandate body camera usage. Have an independent auditor review the footage. Prosecute the crimes discovered on the body cam footage. Terminate the police who do not use the mandated body cameras.

  • Of course it does

The Internet has made people flock to places where people think like them.

Additionally, FaceBook, Google News, and many other sites intentionally show users material that it knows they will interact with to trigger dopamine releases. It's addictive by design.

  • Most boomers spent the 60s beating the shit out of Civil Rights protestors and spitting on children because their schools were desegregated.

I think that's just a Southern thing. Living in the North, my grandparents never discussed beating the shit out of civil rights protesters. Nor did they spout overtly racist things.

They were prejudice, but it was more of a I've never seen anyone with that color skin and it's different so I'm uncomfortable.
