  • The settlement at Roanoke [...] Still unsolved to this day.

The word "CROATOAN" was carved on one of the buildings in the colony. The colonists had had friendly interactions with the native people living on Croatoan Island, which was nearby. There were later reports of native people with fair skin and beards on Croatoan Island.

So mysterious! Where could the colonists possibly have gone?

  • Definitely.

The Norwegians have a saying, "there's no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing."

Which goes to show how little they have to deal with high temperatures. You can always add more layers if it's cold, but you can only strip down so far in the heat.

  • Goodhart's Law: Any statistical regularity will tend to collapse once pressure is placed on it for control purposes.

Or, to paraphrase, any metric that becomes a target ceases to be a good metric. Ranking algorithms, by their nature, use some sort of quantifiable metric as a heuristic for quality.

  • Even if it's true, it's essentially meaningless:

Nonhuman biologics on Mars or Europa? Discovery of the century (assuming they weren't accidentally ferried up by a rover). But Earth? You have to go to a great deal of trouble to create a space without nonhuman biologics.
