  • Absolute panic and disarray. I wonder who he would go with. Logically, it would have to be a woman or person of color to counter Harris, right? Would there be anyone who would boost him among pro-Palestinian voters, I wonder?

  • We were not ignoring that. Everyone I've seen admitting they were wrong, including myself, said they felt no one else would be able to unite the party quickly enough to avoid a chaotic shit show. I still have no idea how Harris pulled it off, but it's awesome to behold.

If this energy and momentum can last until the election I'm certain she can win.

  • I don't really know anything about the situation there. I don't know if you know the answers but I have questions.

Realistically, is there any hope for democracy to prevail? What is the likelihood the military would step in? Not that military coups are a good thing, either. It sounds like people are more keen to escape than to rise up.

Edit: assuming the exit polls aren't the thing being manipulated.

  • I'm for the changes, but I'm skeptical about whether anything can be accomplished. If the SC changes aren't done as an amendment, they'll be subject to SC review. Getting anything past either of those bars seems nigh impossible.

Similarly, if the SC rules that presidential immunity is implied in the constitution, they could also block that without an amendment.

Maybe the plan isn't to succeed but just to establish a record that Republican lawmakers are good with a supreme executive and corrupt courts, but I sort of feel like they've all but said that aloud anyway.

    ETA:

But while we're on the subject of changing things, I wonder about after an 18 year term is up, if there would be any use for a sort of Justice Emeritus who doesn't get a vote, but can write concurring/dissenting opinions and maybe serve in either an advisory or ethics review capacity. So keep the lifetime appointment with all the advantages of that, but allow for the actual sitting court to change more over time. I don't know; I haven't really fleshed out the idea because it's a pipe dream at this point.

  • Lots of road head. Feel like that was more common 30 years ago. Probably too risky with cell phones and dash cams getting your license plate.

In Thailand I saw a moped with a family of about 7 (not even uncommon), and a bus making a three point turn in the middle of majorly busy roads in Bangkok.

  • Thank you. I have to stay where I am physically and work remote. Got a wife and kids with their own house and families. Not really an option to leave that all behind.

However I've been known to take extended vacations and work from an AirBNB.

  • The thing I liked about Reddit, and the thing I like about Lemmy is the focus on the discussion over the users. Following individuals instead of topics feels really weird to me.

I understand the interest in the feature, just offering another perspective.

That being said, it would be cool to have a little tighter integration with Mastodon for that sort of thing. There are people here I would be happy to interact with outside of the narrow confines of a particular news article. It would be cool to link those contexts.

    Good call on video embeds.
