  • I'm not sure how the technology works there, but here, very few businesses even have the old manual card machine that uses carbon copies. I've learned to keep a small amount of cash. Plus it's hot and sticky here, so the squatter that hangs out at the corner shop a few miles away -- seldom asks for anything, but if I ask them, they will request a cold soda and occasionally a hot dog

    This person never had a kitten, let alone a mom-less feral. They certainly do exercise patience, at all hours, specifically 3-6 in the morning. Mine just settled down on my arm that's alternately a tree and scratching/teething post.

  • "want to hide” != Privacy. Maybe I want to donate anonymously. Maybe I want to leave $5 in a community pantry or pay a backyard mechanic. Maybe I want to pay a neighbor for picking up milk for me. Maybe in a world of always on surveillance, it's a small act of resistance.

  • It's not just the Orthodox. It pretty much is the whole Church, which is now and was then very political. Schismed people are malleable and controllable, and expedient for rulers. That is why I read the Ethiopian Bible, complete with mistranslations, then go do weeks or months of tedious research to find the actual translations, and what that meant in the ancient Judaism and its parent religions. It's also why I feel free to discard anything after Jesus ' teachings.

  • Well that and built in chemicals like pest control which aren't great for health. I know prioritization is necessary, and I also have to think adverse chemical effects are amplified by harsh conditions and age factors, but I'm not a biology expert, so there's that. I just hope the choices aren't between short term malnourishment and long term cancer.
