  • Wonder how duck guns do against drones?

There are 10ga shotguns designed to shoot high brass loads to lead and take down fast moving waterfowl. Market hunters back in the day also had what were basically shot cannons they used.

They'd have to be close in from the Ukrainian footage I've seen. Some of the drones could have been taken down by shotgun with a good shot.

Higher drones would require flack, I guess.

  • That system seems to be malfunctioning severely. Bypassing that system has physical risks to the user and should not be attempted lightly.

  • Different hooks for different folks.

I escaped into Fallout 3 for a while in my late twenties, for instance. Multiplayer shooters are not very enjoyable to me. I don't care to build the muscle memory to get good at it.

In general, gaming is no longer important to me. I do still play some Tetris, and my girl likes watching me play Zelda so it's a good way for us to have some couch time before bed.

My life is pretty good, I have an easy wonderful marriage, I don't need that sort of escape anymore. Have had trouble with alcohol since 2020.

My wife has had problems in the past with mobile puzzle games like Candy Crush. From what I understand, those sorts of games are particularly effective at catching women 20 and up.

Multiplayer shooters are particularly effective at catching boys and young men. I don't have a source but I'm pretty sure most of the people playing shooters are pretty stereotypically male.

Anyhow, yeah, the right kind of 'brain' is shorthand for cis-het males ages 12-25, at a guess. And yada yada, other gendered folks will get caught as well but probably aren't the primary target for fortnite or whatever shooter.

  • That shit sounds addictive as fuck for the right kind of brain. Thanks for the explanation! .

  • What is a live service multiplayer shooter game and how is it different from like old school duke nukem 3D multiplayer?

I've been seeing the term "live service" and I can't get a clear answer from Google. My computer gaming days are mostly behind me and I don't always keep up.

  • You can't draw any real world conclusions from this methodology.

Apples are safe to eat even though the seeds contain arsenic. Take a bunch of seeds and put them in a blender and test it. That test will show them being toxic.

I would like to see a methodology that is closer to real world use. No way to know if it's a real problem.

  • If you're ever up Huntsville way, check out Beaver Dam Swamp. It's just off I-565, boardwalk out over a tupelo swamp. Absolutely beautiful, eerie.

Spent a lot of time squirrel hunting in the Wheeler Wildlife Refuge swamps. Found a spot where I could watch the whooping cranes.

  • Pedantry incoming!

That is a swing cylinder revolver. It has a double action. There are also single action revolvers with a gated cylinder, (think cowboy movies). There are break barrel revolvers with single or double actions. There are bolt action rifles and shotguns where the bolt seals the breach. Semi auto rifles, shotguns, and handguns also generally have a bolt that seals the breach. Pump action shotguns and rifles are also a thing, kind of halfway between semi auto and bolt action.

    I don't know of a "breach action."

    Pedantry ends.

  • Thanks for putting this into words. I've had a vague discontent and disgruntlement with superhero crap for a long time. While this isn't the only reason I dislike superhero movies, this is a big part of it.

I do still like The Punisher movie with Jain, Dredd, The Crow, and a few others. Antiheros in general. They're also more human and not as one dimensional.

  • I'm the backwards man!

I think it was ahead of its time.

  • See Cultural aspects on Wikipedia.

Your general feeling comes from what you know, and what you know is limited to your personal worldview.

See, that's kind of condescending. I know that solstices and equinoxes are important and were recognized by prehistoric humans all over the world. This isn't western vs eastern hegemony bullshit. Note that even the Chinese calendar is divisible by 4 and delineated by the solstices. I've also read about the solar observatories found in Mexico that predate European involvement as well as the wooden 'henge' of the mound builders.

Trying to act like recognition of solstices and equinoxes is some sort of Western cultural imposition is silly.

  • Wouldn't solar observation pretty much universally divide the year into something divisible by four? Unless you're directly on the equator, there are four points in a year and four points of direction (other than 'right here').

I haven't read deeply about world calendars, but do know that the solstices are pretty much universally recognized.

Not a history or anthropology buff, but I have a general feeling that four pointed symbols are often tied to the solar year. You can build a solar calendar with a stick and rocks.

  • Not really any context other than trying to put words to the incestuous cannibal horrorshow that is about to begin. Just trying to buckle up for the next four years and hope me and mine aren't in the splash zone.

  • I've always kind of figured this was the actual origin of the swastika and why it was created independently by various cultures. The arms from the center are the solstices and equinoxes and the trailing arms from the elbows are the seasons that follow.

  • Mutant and brain damaged kittens with crab claws all in a box together trying to eat and fuck each other.

  • Sounds like your grandfather was a wise man. That's a great story!

Luckily, I've never ended up in a survival situation. However, I have a few habits. I keep a fire source or two in my truck, zippo in my jeans. Feel naked without a pocket knife and keep a knife or two in my truck. I also keep a piece of pine heart in my truck bed. Has come in handy many times and I've built fires in southern February thunderstorms.

Taught my kids how to build a one match fire with just a knife and a match when they were in elementary school.

Also taught them to never go in the woods without a knife, fire, and water. Taught them how to find pine heart. Probably time for a refresher course for my son on fire building.

I've been trying to teach my son how to sharpen knives, but it requires a level of stubbornness that he doesn't have yet. (I don't see the point in all those fancy angled sharpeners.) Use a flat stone, diamond preferred for speed and sharpness. You can make any sort of edge you want. Get good, and in a pinch you can sharpen a knife or other piece of metal with a brick or flat rock.

  • Recently moved from the south to North East. Didn't know what good Italian food was.

  • Very nice. Never owned a Benchmade, can't justify spending that on myself. 😁 I carry Chinese Kershaws, easy to sharpen and I can beat the hell out of them without guilt. I'm a cheap knife person, other than the Victorinox Swiss Champ I also always carry (on my fifth or so). Like Dexter Russell and Mora for fixed blades.

Any chance you'd share the survival stories?

Here are our kitchen knives, mostly carbon Dexter Russell:

  • What kind of knife? Also, just like cats, got a pic?

  • I went with 3M 6900 (Large) as it is what I have experience with and before I saw your message Amazon was low stock and MSC was really high. Most of my mask use has been in industrial process and only for short periods.

I will absolutely look into the Scott AV-3000. I only got a couple pair of the full face.

Will do. You have machinery and tooling questions lemme know.
