  • NextDNS is awesome if you want the simple solution, and don't have any hardware to install services on. Thee free version is somehwta limited to queries(300k per month), but personally didn't hit those when I was using the free tier.

NextDNS has a lot of nice customization and can easily had custom block lists. The pro version is 2euros a month I believe. I personally stick with NextDNS due to never having to worry about updating the service and it always just works. I also have it hooked to my Tailnet, that way all my devices use it by default.

But ofc, Pihole, Adguard and the rest are also awesome. Best to just pick one that looks good for you. The end goal here is to just have something running in the background rather than nothing.

  • This looks really neat! I'm on Voyager atm, but would love to give this a good go 😊

  • I believe it's more about what you do to the system, than about each box you can buy.

I have not heard of any one android TV box being more privacy respecting than others. In the end they're all running Android TV. However there are a bunch of things you can do to debloat your system to minimise processes etc... Y nvidia shield at least let's me disable any system app I want. You can ofc sideloads apps, for example you can:

    • Projectivy Launcher, instead of stock launcher. This launcher looks alot better and also avoids the new fullscreen ads.
    • SmartTube, instead of YouTube. It's YT but without ads and has sponsor block.

If you want true privacy than you're gonna want a Linux PC of any sort connected to the TV instead.

  • Save yourself from reading this article, just a ramble that has zero points.

  • Nice tip! Will give it a try and see if it solves anything. Might also just remove the default launcher through ADB and see if that does anything.

  • This looks absolutely awesome, well done! And what a lucky cat 🐱

  • Too typical... At least I'm not alone on this, was about to go crazy. Thanks for the post, will follow it up 👍👍

  • I'll see if I could have this instead, seems alot better.

  • I was soo surprised when I first tried DietPi, it's so god damn easy and smooth to use. Big kudos to the devs for that project!

  • I recently had the same thoughts but was Ted to try nonetheless. Asked for some beginner friendly resources here on lemmy a little while back. Might be to further help for some 😊

  • Good to know, glad to hear!

  • Thank you, i believe this is the right way to think about it; just difficult to grasp. But you're absolutely right!

  • I'm using a fork of Signal, but don't think it's limited to the fork. But you could always check.

  • I do not see a good reason to get this over the Steam Deck.

  • Settings > Privacy > (scroll a little down) > Block Unkown

  • No worries mate, appreciated your comment 😊

  • Good and unique tips, love it!

  • Wow! Thanks for the detailed response, although I'm not based in the US, I'm sure I could find some similar things to what you mentioned. Thanks a lot 🌼
