My memory isn't what it was and it's been at least 100 years, back when Krautchan was good existent, but I do think Zangendeutsch came before we started enforcing it by declaring offenders Hurensöhne. If there are/were ever people who seriously wanted to ban English (and allow only German exclusively), they were a tiny minority and the point of Zangendeutsch went right over their head.
Depends on what you think of as "sleep" and what processes are involved. Does Data's brain have brain waves that change to make him go unconscious? Is Data even "conscious" and what is "conscious" (there's some debate about that on the show)?
You have to differentiate between closed caption subtitles and translated subtitles.
Automatically generated closed captions, for people with hearing impairments, where it's just the words spoken transcribed, are indeed one thing that AI could hypothetically do. It can't do it yet, at least not without supervision and human editing.
Excellent closed captions also include sound effects where necessary, colour coding, speaker names, tone indicators, they move the text around on screen to better show who's talking - that's something I can only see humans do.
Let's shame anyone who uses AI to translate subtitles (or translate anything, really).
Edit: I just learnt that apparently the different variants of English don't agree on what "captions" and "subtitles" are.
People say that Blink is the episode to show people you want to watch Doctor Who. It's a good episode, it's a good Doctor Who episode, no doubt, but wtf it is NOT representative of the show. An episode that leaves me questioning "Who even is that Doctor person that was in it for an entire 5 minutes but seems to be the main character"? If that was the first thing I'd seen of Doctor Who, I would've been SO confused (and probably disappointed) by everything else.
Start at S01E01 Rose or S05E01 The Eleventh Hour or maybe S11E01 The Woman Who Fell to Earth or, if you're very courageous, S01E01 An Unearthly Child. But BLINK?! Fuck.
