  • Skating used to be whole life, my right leg has been held together by a metal rod for the last 7 years now.

Like you, it was caused by an avoidable miskate that was my own fault. I can still get on skates (though that took about 3 years) and I'm limited to doing that for about half an hour and can't move fluidly.

For me the solution wasn't to do everything I could to continue doing the thing I loved, but rather to let it go. These days I ride (small, quiet) motorbikes, walk my dogs, and have recently taken up archery.

Had I not broken my leg there's a diversity of experiences I'd have missed out on, because I was enraptured with The Thing. There's more to the world than one single hobby!

If you have close friends and family, do try and talk through how you're feeling with them, and think about seeing a therapist - these sorts of limitations are hard to adapt to for everyone!

I wish you good luck in whatever sort of adventures you have next :-)

  • That's easy for me, the Snowrunner Year 1 expansion pack. Specifically Lake Kola and Imandra, when coaxing a heavily laden truck through the deep snow, day slides to night and the northern lights come out. A borderline spiritual experience because to get there you have to have got through things that seemed impossible.

  • Ok cool, I've added Cross Ange to the list and I'll have it a fair crack :-)

  • This looks like a really interesting anime to watch, I'm going to add it to my list.

It's a pity the article didn't have a spoiler warning though.

  • In September, when the weather has cooled off enough, me and my partner are heading out into "the desert" (actually the lowlands of Aragón) on two little motorbikes. Camping and adventuring.

  • That is awesome! Do you have any plans to fettle it further, or are you going to start making other controllers for the game?

  • Nobody ever comes to the comments for The 51st State, despite it's brilliance

  • Thanks for the thoughtful reply! Since posting I'm about halfway through Yona and really enjoying it for the adventure and action ... less fussed about the romance TBH (I like a nice slow-burning romance, but this feels a bit forced).

I might have a look at Cross Ange, it depends on how intrusive the fan service is!

  • I use Linux Mint at home and Windows 10 and 11 at work. The UI is basically interchangeable, I use both in the same manner.

I've had zero reliability issues and Mint was easier to install than Windows when I did it 4 years ago (not had to reinstall it yet, just kept on updating).

Games wise, I just play stuff through steam or classic emulators and it works well enough that typing this is the most I've thought about how it works for a long time.

I'm guessing the people who complain are running some gnarly full-custom linux on new hardware and trying to get the latest games to run ... that was once me, I now use a PlayStation for newer games because PC gaming was just a bottomless money and time pit.

  • In The Guardian long reads there's an excerpt from the book which is very moving

  • Oof, there's a long list and I wish I had time to do them all properly ... my advice would be to find out what's happening close to you that includes a social element and go try that. That's how I got into archery and I'm really enjoying it because when I go to the club there's always some friendly chatty people there :-)

  • Some intimate time with a consenting partner of your preferred gender, or cheesecake.

  • Also, in DS9, he asked (kinda) Klingons to join him in battle. They got there in time to help the harvest, and when challenged he said that time was their enemy.

  • This sounds like great news, if only to avoid the effect of being mixed in with ancient aliens bs etc.

  • Headset, as in headphones with a microphone. I use it for MS Teams meetings and a bit of music and it works fine.

The point OP was trying to make is that you can use USB-c for other things besides listening to music.

Since you seem to be an audiophile with a list of fancy headphones (don't ask me, my Cardo combined with earplugs is fine for the level of listening I want to do) then wouldn't an offboard DAC / amp that you could keep far longer than a phone, and isn't restricted by size constraints going to be better than a built-in version?

Also, if you're worried about e-waste maybe you shouldn't buy so many headphones. My partner's Sennheisers have lasted 20 years so far.
