  • I was just making an abstract sci-fi joke based on how cold fusion has been presented like a Holy Grail in the past. Obviously a better source of energy isn't going to solve all our problems, no matter how good it is.

  • It's not that it's especially effective. It's that the wealthy have been consistently pumping money into blaring division and individualism into every corner of society they thought relevant for decades upon decades. They've had plenty of time by now to figure out enough of what does and doesn't work for them (including types of journalistic reporting to promote and suppress) in terms of manipulating the news, and promoting division in many ways (including not just stirring up controversy about social issues, but other forms of division as well).

We were never going to outspend them, so I think our best bet was always to out-human them. (And probably to set up parallel economies if things get really bad.) For now, we can still start at the bottom of Maslow's Hierarchy and meet people we want to reach where they're at. If they aren't surviving well, they're not going to be as focused on other issues. Wherever they're at, we should focus on listening and empathizing first, then poke holes in the lies they've been told once they feel heard and respected. People who have been where they've been are the most likely to reach them. To me, all the MAGA regret we're seeing now in the US, and all the chemical spills and natural disasters that don't get major media attention and which local governments are too underfunded to help with are an opportunity for somebody to reach some of these people (ideally with monetary aid from an organized movement), so they can get their heads right and get to work on waking up those to whom they're adjacent.

  • "Death to [geographical place]" shouldn't be said by anyone. However it's meant, it's way too easy for people to take literally, and it provides cover for the few that actually do mean literal harm. Maybe you mean "down with Israel," but even that can be taken the wrong way. (Much like saying "down with [monarch]" would historically be understood to mean that monarch should die as opposed to stepping down.)

  • Project 2025 is the means they are using but it's not the end in and of itself. There are at least two identifiable factions at play in that government with specific goals, and no doubt other factions too. (I'm just picking up the details of this stuff myself.) One is an extreme sect of Evangelicalism that even other Evangelicals call "heretical" or "false prophets," and another is the "Dark Enlightenment" tech bros. These are people with specific agendas that aren't really hidden but require some light research. (Again, I've only scratched the surface myself, in my spare time.)

*edit - I thought I should add that same religious group that's basically out for world domination exists in Canada and this article has most of what I know about their aims.

  • Actually they fully allow the sale of explicit Nazi merch at Shopify. They just came up with a vaguely plausible excuse to get rid of Kanye's store specifically. The execs at Shopify are outspoken extreme right wingers. These are guys get along well with the Proud Boys (which is considered a terrorist group in Canada).

  • I'm sure we all have suspicions about them but I want to know what their excuse is, especially considering the dangerous (for them) possibility their jobs could come to an end if Trump solidifies the level of power he obviously wants to have.

  • Probably. The way he's been campaigning, people are going to read him as being too close to Trump. I'd like to think more and more of the folks who were willing to ignore it before are becoming less tolerant of his divisiveness since this is a time Canadians need to come together.

  • It's hard to understand how dismissive they're being when their own constituents are reaching out to them. Is this article leaving it out or have they given some sort of rationale for choosing their battles instead of going all out?

  • After the Trump administration warned federal employees of “adverse consequences” for not reporting colleagues resisting orders to eliminate diversity, equity and inclusion programs, citizens began submitting false reports to the special email account: DEIAtruth@opm.gov. Here’s one example: “A man named Donald Trump is doing affirmative action for billionaires and oligarchs against the mandate to stop hiring minority groups.”

A commenter after my own heart. 😄

  • Presumably smelling it is fine at a bit more of a distance. The issue is the same as if you were to put Vaseline near your nostrils. Particles of the petroleum jelly base can get inhaled into the lungs if it's too close.
