  • What's the fucking point of getting homeowner's insurance if it's not going to cover the most likely source of damage? Earthquakes, wildfires, floods, a tree falling on it during a storm? All natural disasters. Are people in florida going to 'accidentally' set their houses on fire to ensure they'll be able to file a claim after a hurricane?

  • I love it for the most part, the only thing I wish they'd change is the cleanliness tols for smaller or larger objects. It's not fun to try and pixel hunt the last bit of rust on the inside of a wheel, and it's a little disappointing to get almost done with a big flat panel only for the game to decide you're done before you can spray off that last little chunk.

  • It interests me in part because it seems to be an admission that even mild cultural nonconformity (non-approved hair colors, a piercing in the wrong place) upsets the right.

I don't think it's about cultural nonconformity, per se - there are plenty of people leaning conservative all the way to protofascist who will tell you they're nonconformist, and to whatever extent that might actually be true, a number of them take delight in the shock value that the expressed nonconformity provokes. This is all anecdotal, but I think when they talk about 'Purple hair, et al.' I think it has more to do with the objectification of women and how hierarchy and authoritarianism apply in conservative contexts.

Male conservatives, especially in digital spaces, view women almost exclusively in one of two camps: as wives and mothers, to service a man's needs before anything else, or as 'radical feminists' with any number of more derogatory terms appended. It's why they get so up in arms when a woman in the media expresses an opinion of any kind, on any topic, that doesn't conform strictly to that worldview, even when men on any part of the political spectrum express the exact same opinions. Any woman who dyes their hair purple, or gets a piercing, or a visible tattoo, wears suggestive clothing in public, or does anything to alter their appearance to 'anything outside of stepford wife territory,' is summarily filed into that latter camp, because the expression of individuality implies that a woman will see themselves as an equal individual, and when most conservatives see women as things to service male needs before their own, it upsets them when a woman exists alongside in the social hierarchy, rather than beneath.

Again, this is all anecdotal, but that's how I see conservative acquaintances talk about and treat the women in their lives.

  • That feels kind of like saying "in a galaxy with holodecks, who would still know how to paint?" Cooking is a skill and an art, and I'm sure there are plenty of people who do it casually in the future for the enjoyment of creating something with their own hands.

  • I think a big part of it, at least in the states, is how inextricable the career is from the person, because of how dependent our employers make us on them for everything from basic needs to healthcare to a retirement plan. Imagine, that every time you reported a minor issue with the aircraft, you would risk not just your ability to fly ever again, but also your ability to work off the mountain of debt that you accrued learning how to fly a plane, and that if you lost your job your best case scenario would be crushing poverty for the rest of your life?

Of course you'd never say a damn thing - even if it meant a high risk of killing yourself and everyone on board the plane. When your choice is die slowly or die quickly, I know which one I'd take. So is it any surprise that people don't speak up about it?

  • Honestly, at this point every AAA title should just be treated as having a release date of 3mo to a year out from the actual launch. There's zero reason to buy a game before day one, and any developer that tries to give you one a la cosmetic preorder bonuses probably doesn't have a product worth your money, and is just trying to milk your FOMO for every dollar it's worth.

  • It's funny, because the original purpose of that phrase was "There is a period during which you can voice your concerns about new or changed ops and procedures, and once the dust has settled, you'll feel better about what comes out of the oven because you had a hand in making it." Instead, the new age Jack Welch management types saw the phrase and decided it means "You don't have to like what we say but you have to obey it."

Surprisingly, the latter interpretation does not lead to a happier healthier workplace with high retention rates. Who would've thought?
