The context is right there, on the gitlab page. They don't want to merge it because it would mean they have to do actual work and spend time testing it, which instead they'd prefer their customers to complain to them about the vulnerability first before doing any of that. Not my words, but theirs.
In my opinion it's a completely different beast. The gameplay is much more fluid and forgiving while still being difficulty, just without all the jank.
NewPipe is also a good alternative if you want to cut Google off your data, it doesn't use accounts and instead subscriptions are kept locally on the device.
