  • This research raises a lot of interesting questions, but it seems premature to deem the overkill hypothesis dead. The timing for extinctions outside of the Americas still lines up quite well. My hunch is the Clovis culture somehow was able to dominate pre-existing people across the continent and that they may have been responsible for these extinctions but hopefully further research will shed more light on the sequence of events.

Also, deextinction should be a consideration for these lost megafauna. We don’t know how their absence may have degraded these ecosystems but based on the loss of other large mammals it could be a substantial problem that we’re simply unaware of.

  • Ironic because bi is the largest queer demographic but also the one that can blend in the easiest which hasn’t forced people to advocate for acceptance.

  • I think it’s a cool feature. Newest version of Lemmy allows admins to block communities from appearing in all while still allowing subscriptions. I think this is the best approach, although it would be nice if this could be done in a more automated fashion instead of admins having to expand the list as more rss feeds are added.

  • Not really comparable since the whole US government is complicit.

  • Won’t they just ignore emails from non-.gov addresses?

  • I agree with what they wrote and I definitely don’t consider anarchocommunists to be the only real leftists. The left is a broad movement it just doesn’t include tankies. Being pro-oligarchy or pro-monarchy is not left no matter how much red paint you put on it.

  • Some, but not all are. It might add some extra expense but couldn’t they move the readers off of federal highways and onto the exits where they meet state and local roads? Might be worth it to preserve the program if the courts side with the president.

  • So what level of calamity are we talking about here? 3% doesn’t sound that low to me.

  • Even most kings weren’t above the law. The America Trump wants to create is far more tyrannical than the monarchy we overthrew.

  • The infrastructure is already built. What funding is needed? It’s just revenue collection at this point.

  • I think a few thousand in my city but hard to estimate.

  • Huh? I never said SEO isn’t real it’s just a totally different process from the one we’re discussing.

  • I don’t think SEO is comparable to these content recommendation algorithms. Maybe it is easy and I’m wrong but everyone seems to just be speculating wildly at this point and it doesn’t seem too useful. How can we get to the bottom of what’s really happening in a way that can be verified with evidence?

  • Thousands were out here in Sacramento. Pretty loud at times. They had some issues with their sound system though.

  • Well when they say user engagement they seem to be talking about users taking actions to engage with content. But they say elsewhere that the TikTok algorithm doesn’t seem to respond to these actions in general, so it’s unsurprising that this is not the cause. Instead, it seems to optimize for viewing time which doesn’t seem to be part of the available data here, unfortunately.

However, if we start with a very pro-Palestinian user-base (as suggested by the initial post count) then it’s not surprising that these users would be more inclined to watch content that shares their political views and therefore the algorithm would boost these more popular videos to more people. So these numbers really don’t show anything unusual that I can identify.

Maybe that’s all you were saying initially but I was more wondering whether there is evidence that TikTok is boosting certain content above and beyond what is of interest to its users in an attempt to influence them. Given the lack of key data, this analysis cannot directly answer this question, but the patterns here strike me as fairly organic looking.
