It’s basically illegal to build apartments in most of the bay area other than a few tiny downtown areas. It’s changing in the last few years but still very difficult.

Unregulated? Clearly you don’t know the Bay Area.

Honestly I’m not saying I support them exactly but if Trump shuts down global trade with the tariffs maybe there will be a silver lining of fewer invasive species introduced. The world has been absolutely ravaged by them for the past 150 years.

True, but unfortunately, this species is way over-planted in many cities. I would not recommend them unless they happen to be uncommon in your local area. Urban forests need to be as diverse as possible to resist the constant barrage of pests and diseases being introduced by global trade.

In California we have a relatively new pest called shot-hole borers which are killing off many of the London planes, so we’re scrambling to plant other species that can resist them.

Also, resistance to air pollution isn’t as crucial as it once was due to better emissions technologies.

Your potted tree isn’t a tree in the sense that I’m talking about. The environmental services trees provide are all based on size and so are predominantly provided by larger trees. Cities usually avoid planting these under electrical wires and in smaller tree basins to avoid damage to infrastructure. So practically, there are many urban locations where big trees won’t fit.

Trees don’t attract VC funding the way some dumb new invention does.

I guess this could be useful in places trees don’t fit but I think there are other simpler solutions.

The amount of water required is trivial compared to most other water uses. Especially if correct species are selected.

The FBI should be abolished or at the bare minimum severely curtailed to only cases where state law enforcement is somehow impossible.

My hypothesis has always been that we find baby (and adult!) animals cute to incentivize us to care for them when they need care, because our ancestors benefited tremendously from their presence in our lives. I agree that it probably started as accidental overlap from parental instincts but I think the feeling is too strong and applies to too many distinct animals to be coincidental.

That said, this is just my pet theory and I have no evidence for it.

Strikes need to be coordinated by unions or some other organizational structure. It takes a lot of work to organize. We have to do the work first, not just call for it on social media and hope it magically happens.

Maybe. I am hopeful that with declining popularity the political resistance will only be stronger in a few months. Trump is pissing off a lot of people and that makes him weaker every day. So if he tries again I’m even more optimistic we force him to back down.
