  • I think at this point I only ever go to fast food places when a friend who loves fast food places is over and we happen to go get food. Happens maybe once every couple of years.

    I think I'm at an age that if I want burgers or barbecue or something unhealthy or greasy is rather make it myself and have it be extra dirty and less expensive.

  • I highly recommend that when you do you count calories and pair IF with some planned regular light activity. I would go for long walks three or four days a week and that was enough to lose a lot of weight until the gyms opened up post-pandemic.

  • Often, yeah. I always ate fairly healthy but I just have no limit that tells me I'm full so I'd tend to overdo it calorie-wise.

    Mostly I'd say the issue was that being heavier made it hard to be active in general. Mentally and physically exhausting being so heavy and stiff, it was tough to get motivated to get out and do stuff. Now that I'm lighter it's no sweat without pain.

    I also found out fairly quick once I started working out and counting calories by the gram that my BMR is just trash, I burn very few calories on average.

  • Great descriptions! Lately I've been working on the (pardon me, I couldn't find a use for them) distal interphalangeal knuckles, just hanging from my finger tips. Pretty much all the good climbers at my gym can do that with weight added on a belt so I've still got a long way to go. But yeah I used to lift pretty heavy and this was pretty much impossible before I started practicing, just seem like totally different parts of the body although they're all in the hand.

  • I've been doing it since January 2020, which is crazy now that I wrote it down. But I lost 100 pounds that way and I don't know how to be healthy otherwise. I bike, climb, hike, play in three bands and do a pretty physical job, I often do multiple of those things in a day without issue.

    I don't know where I was going with this, but I don't find it to be unhealthy, in fact I feel like I was probably closer to death before.

  • Any sort of exercise that removes the thumbs and metacarpophalangeal joints from the equation, if you can close your hand, lock your grip and hang off of your skeleton you'll only add so much to your grip. There are actual crimping blocks and rolling handles you can attatch to weights to strengthen your grip.

    Emil Abrahamsson seems to think that hangboarding is the answer to this problem, he suggests holding a hangboard without lifting your total weight off of the ground on the smallest ledge you can manage, twice a day, every day, to turn your grip into iron. He recently beat a lot of pound for pound grip championship records so I think his training techniques are worth paying attention to.

    That being said, climbing itself might be the answer since these elite dudes routinely hang off of the absolute tips of their fingers while lifting their bodies up a wall and even for someone who can deadlift a shitton getting used to lifting your weight on crimps takes months to achieve.

    It's also worth saying that you have very few muscles in your hand and grip strength is more a game of strengthening tendons and ligaments, which takes a lot longer than strengthening muscles, which might be why one of the guys with the most world records in grip strength right now is 70+ years old.

  • There's no limit to who will fall prey to their particular algorithms and confirm their particular biases. Mix that in with an identity rooted in the bigotry and biases they inherit from their parents.

    That and stupidity. People are so fucking stupid.

  • Four ingredients is enough.

    One whole egg, one cup oil, one big pinch salt, one tablespoon vinegar or lemon juice. Stick blend and that's probably the best mayo you can have.

    I find the mustard and pepper make it less versatile and separating the egg whites changes absolutely nothing.

  • Damn, as a woodworker I can't tell you how many times we used to be talking or messing around in the shop and mindlessly making little lines of sawdust as if it was cocaine. None of us did cocaine, its just what you do when you have a large pile of dust in front of you.
