  • I think UBI will become a lot more plausible in the future.

That said, as a macro approach to the problem of job security and AI taking jobs, I see serious potential in worker co-ops which own the equipment and processes. As in the past, the problem isn't that technology is making something more efficient. The problem is a small subset of people benefiting from the technology while others struggle. If we own the business and democratically control decision making then we all can benefit. (And going beyond protecting our jobs we create more long term security and power)

The problem of course is how we get there from here. For myself, my current plan is to grind enough until I'm in a position to start a co-op (or join an existing one) and then focus on growth, bringing more people onboard, and expanding the benefits that the co-op can bring its members.

I value small co-ops like local grocery stores, that said to really move the dial in creating the world we want to see, I think we need to get big, and to be competitive in terms of product as well as pay compared to non-democratic major players. One co-op I'm excited about is Obran, which is a conglomerate that converts private owned businesses to co-ops. I'm also excited about platform co-ops like the drivers cooperative and Artisans cooperative.

  • Joker is claiming he's smoking good weed and Batman disagrees telling him it's low quality. Then Joker goes to clean out the bottom part of the grinder he uses to prepare his weed, which is the part that catches all the tiny weed particles, so it's the most potent part.

  • There are plenty of other things we could do to limit corruption before we rule out term limits for that reason. We could also think about politicians who feel more free to "do the right thing" even when unpopular because they won't be afraid about winning the next election.

  • You're right they have a fiduciary duty. I think what the other commenter was saying is that the interpretation of that duty can be twisted into all kinds of shapes. If someone believed in pro social ideas they could make the case that treating workers with respect and growing sustainably is the best way to continue making money. That a shareholder would demand other crueler or more short-sighted policies doesn't mean a legal requirement.

  • To clarify I'm talking about aesthetics. I'm not defending anything safety wise. But that's an unrelated argument from "it's ugly".

It's clearly an emotionally charged object, which is why in one of my other comments here I said I'd probably accept a pt cruiser instead, just because people make the instant connection between the truck and elon musk.

  • Taste is subjective so if someone doesn't like it that's valid.

For me, designs are successful based on the impression and experience they give people. The cyber truck to me gives off a futuristic vibe, it's intentional, it's a design that knows what it wants. Minimal polygons, minimal rounded edges. Uncommon material/finish. Visually striking, unique, memorable.

I think the Aztec isn't a good design because it wants to be futuristic but doesn't go far enough. Because it's trying to retain some traditional elements it looks like design by committee.

My impression is the pt cruiser and SSR were intended to be modern takes on retro/classy designs from say, the 50s. In the sense that they're curved they succeed, but the curves are in the wrong places and the curve radiuses are wrong. They look bubbly. They look like toys. The effect is amplified because they don't have a lot of the fine detail that was present on old cars.

  • I would probably take a pt cruiser just because of the reputational risk of driving a cyber truck - that people will think you're an Elon stan. But purely from a looks perspective I think the cyber truck looks way better.
